Align your credentials to biopharma automation standards
Thermo Fisher's Controls Engineer openings frequently require experience with FDA-regulated manufacturing environments. Before applying, document any work involving 21 CFR Part 11 compliance, GAMP guidelines, or GMP-aligned PLC and SCADA systems to match what their hiring teams screen for.
Target sites with active capital projects
Thermo Fisher expands controls headcount when facilities are commissioning new production lines. Research announced expansions at their biologics or fill-finish sites and apply directly to those locations, where open requisitions reflect genuine near-term hiring rather than evergreen pipeline postings.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Controls Engineer roles by sponsorship
Not every open Controls Engineer listing at Thermo Fisher is tied to an active sponsorship budget. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where visa sponsorship is confirmed, saving you from applying to positions where international candidates are screened out early.
Prepare for a technical screening grounded in Rockwell and Siemens platforms
Thermo Fisher's controls infrastructure commonly runs on Rockwell Automation and Siemens PLCs. Review your hands-on experience with ControlLogix, TIA Portal, or FactoryTalk before interviews, and be ready to describe commissioning work on systems similar to their manufacturing environment.
Understand how PERM timing affects your long-term sponsorship path
If you're pursuing permanent residence through EB-2 or EB-3, PERM labor certification can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS even receives the I-140 petition. Raise green card sponsorship interest during the offer negotiation phase, not after you've already started.

Find Controls Engineer at Thermo Fisher Scientific JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsor H-1B visas for Controls Engineers?
Yes. Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsors H-1B visas for Controls Engineer roles. The company participates in the annual H-1B cap lottery each April, and Controls Engineers in specialty occupation roles involving life sciences manufacturing systems qualify under that classification. If you're already on H-1B with another employer, Thermo Fisher can also file an H-1B transfer, which lets you start working as soon as USCIS receives the petition.
How do I apply for Controls Engineer jobs at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Apply through Thermo Fisher's careers portal, where Controls Engineer roles are posted by site and business unit. Filter by engineering and manufacturing functions to find relevant listings. You can also browse confirmed sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which aggregates Thermo Fisher Controls Engineer roles where international candidates are actively considered. Tailor your resume to reflect FDA-regulated or GMP manufacturing environments, since those details directly influence recruiter screening decisions.
Which visa types does Thermo Fisher Scientific commonly use for Controls Engineers?
Thermo Fisher sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards for Controls Engineers. TN visas apply to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for recent graduates still within their authorization windows. For long-term sponsorship, Thermo Fisher supports PERM-based Green Card petitions through the EB-2 or EB-3 pathway depending on the role's degree requirements and prevailing wage tier.
What qualifications does Thermo Fisher Scientific expect for Controls Engineer roles?
Most Controls Engineer postings at Thermo Fisher require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, or a closely related field. Hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI configuration, and industrial networking is standard. Roles in biopharma or diagnostics manufacturing also expect familiarity with GMP environments, validation protocols, and change control processes. Senior-level roles may require experience leading commissioning or qualification activities for new production equipment.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Controls Engineer offer at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Timeline depends on your current status. F-1 OPT candidates can start immediately if E-Verify authorization clears in time. H-1B cap cases filed in April have an October 1 start date, creating a gap of up to six months. H-1B transfers typically allow a start date within days of USCIS receiving the petition. For Green Card sponsorship through PERM, expect at least 12 to 18 months for labor certification before USCIS reviews the I-140 petition, with total timelines varying significantly by country of birth.
