Align your degree field to the role
Thermo Fisher Scientist roles typically require a degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related life science. Make sure your resume and cover letter name your exact discipline so recruiters can immediately confirm specialty occupation eligibility without guessing.
Target roles that match your visa timeline
If you're on F-1 OPT, filter for Scientist openings in regulated research or manufacturing divisions, where project timelines often extend beyond a year and employers have stronger incentive to file an H-1B before your OPT window closes.
Confirm sponsorship intent before the final interview
Thermo Fisher posts roles at both the individual contributor and senior scientist levels. Ask your recruiter which roles are approved for sponsorship during the screening call, not after an offer, so you're not negotiating from scratch at the last stage.
Prepare documentation for the LCA filing stage
Once an offer is extended, your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can receive your H-1B petition. Have your degree certificates, transcripts, and any publication or project records ready to hand to HR immediately so the LCA isn't delayed on your end.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Scientist roles
Scientist openings at Thermo Fisher that include visa sponsorship aren't always labeled clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified sponsoring roles at Thermo Fisher Scientific so you're only applying where sponsorship is confirmed.
Understand how EB-2 and EB-3 green card paths apply
Thermo Fisher sponsors Green Cards for Scientist roles through both EB-2 and EB-3 categories depending on the position's degree requirements. If you're aiming for long-term status, ask your hiring manager early whether the role qualifies for PERM-based sponsorship, since the process typically starts well after initial H-1B approval.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsor H-1B visas for Scientists?
Yes, Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsors H-1B visas for Scientist roles. The company has a consistent pattern of filing H-1B petitions for research, development, and quality science positions. Sponsorship eligibility depends on the specific role and business unit, so confirming with your recruiter during the hiring process is the most reliable way to verify coverage for a given opening.
How do I apply for Scientist jobs at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Applications go through Thermo Fisher's careers portal at thermofisher.com/careers. You can also find Scientist roles at Thermo Fisher that include visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for sponsoring employers. Tailor your application to the scientific discipline listed in the job description, since Thermo Fisher's Scientist roles span analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and manufacturing science with distinct degree requirements for each.
Which visa types does Thermo Fisher Scientific commonly use for Scientist roles?
Thermo Fisher sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas for Scientist positions, and also supports Green Card sponsorship through the EB-2 and EB-3 categories for longer-term employees. TN visa is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose scientific disciplines appear on the USMCA qualifying occupation list, which covers many biology and chemistry roles.
What qualifications does Thermo Fisher Scientific expect for Scientist roles?
Most Scientist postings at Thermo Fisher require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a natural science or engineering discipline, with many roles specifying a master's or Ph.D. for research-focused positions. Hands-on laboratory technique experience, familiarity with GMP or GLP environments, and field-specific tool proficiency such as mass spectrometry, cell culture, or chromatography are commonly listed requirements depending on the division.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take for a Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Standard H-1B processing through USCIS takes three to six months from petition filing, with a start date no earlier than October 1 of the fiscal year for cap-subject cases. If you're on F-1 OPT and your status allows, Thermo Fisher can file before your OPT expires to maintain continuity. Premium processing, currently available for H-1B petitions, reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days for an additional government fee.
