INTRODUCTION
Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world’s challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.
THE ROLE
Thornton Tomasetti’s CORE studio is seeking a highly motivated Computational Design Intern to support our AI-focused work developing Grasshopper-based applications for engineering and design workflows. This internship offers hands-on experience working on real, production-facing tools that combine computational design, automation, and emerging AI capabilities within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with members of the CORE AI and Application Development teams to build user-facing Grasshopper applications that connect parametric models to cloud-based inference and analysis services. The tools you help develop will be used by engineers and designers at Thornton Tomasetti to explore new approaches to automation, optimization, and decision-making in structural and architectural design.
Through this internship, you will gain practical experience designing robust parametric workflows, translating technical ideas into usable tools, and understanding how AI-enabled services can be integrated into real-world engineering applications. You’ll also learn best practices for documentation, usability, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary, professional software and design environment. This is a unique opportunity to apply advanced computational design skills in a high-impact, real-world setting, working with one of the leading innovation teams in the AEC industry.
Responsibilities
- Develop and deploy parametric models in Grasshopper, integrating AI-driven workflows.
- Work with Rhino + Grasshopper, managing complex data tree structures and integrating multiple plugins into cohesive workflows.
- Collaborate with engineers, computational designers, and software developers to refine AI-assisted design tools.
- Contribute to internal documentation, training materials, and user guides for the tools developed.
REQUIREMENTS
- Advanced proficiency in Grasshopper and Rhino, including experience managing data trees and integrating multiple plugins within a single workflow.
- Background in architecture, engineering, or construction (AEC) – strong understanding of building and structural design principles.
- Familiarity with cloud-based computing concepts, particularly as they relate to AI inference, is a plus.
- Coding experience is not required, but it is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Tailor your portfolio to engineering software contexts
Thornton Tomasetti builds internal tools for structural, mechanical, and sustainability workflows. Highlight projects involving computational modeling, BIM integrations, or data pipelines for technical industries rather than generic web or consumer apps.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by visa type
Thornton Tomasetti posts Software Engineer roles across multiple practice areas. Use Migrate Mate to filter positions by the visa type you need so you target roles where sponsorship is already confirmed before you invest time in the application.
Address the specialty occupation requirement early
For H-1B roles at a consulting firm, USCIS scrutinizes whether the position genuinely requires a specific degree. Frame your Software Engineer experience around engineering-domain specialization rather than general programming skills to strengthen that argument.
Align your offer letter timeline with cap deadlines
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start. Work backward from that date when negotiating your offer so Thornton Tomasetti's legal team has enough runway to prepare the petition.
Request clarity on PERM sponsorship during negotiation
Consulting firms often start Green Card sponsorship after a defined tenure. Ask specifically whether the Software Engineer role includes an EB-2 or EB-3 PERM pathway and at what point the firm typically initiates the PERM labor certification with the DOL.

Find Software Engineer at Thornton Tomasetti JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Thornton Tomasetti sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Thornton Tomasetti sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. The firm has a documented history of filing H-1B petitions for technical positions across its practice areas. Because Thornton Tomasetti operates as a consulting and professional services firm, the Software Engineer roles it sponsors typically require a specific degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field to satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Thornton Tomasetti?
Applications go through Thornton Tomasetti's careers portal, where Software Engineer postings are listed by practice area and location. You can also browse open roles filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces positions where Thornton Tomasetti has confirmed sponsorship. Tailor your application to the engineering domain of the specific team, such as structural, sustainability, or digital delivery, rather than submitting a generic software resume.
Which visa types does Thornton Tomasetti commonly use for Software Engineer roles?
Thornton Tomasetti sponsors H-1B and E-3 visas for Software Engineers at the professional level, making it accessible to both the general international pool and Australian citizens specifically. For recent graduates, the firm also supports F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT, which is particularly relevant for students completing degrees at U.S. universities. TN and J-1 sponsorship is available depending on role type and candidate nationality.
What qualifications does Thornton Tomasetti expect for Software Engineer positions?
Most Software Engineer roles at Thornton Tomasetti require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline. The firm builds proprietary tools for structural and infrastructure engineering workflows, so experience with computational geometry, engineering simulation software, or data-intensive platforms is valued alongside standard full-stack or backend skills. Advanced degrees can strengthen both your candidacy and the H-1B specialty occupation argument.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship at Thornton Tomasetti?
If you require a new H-1B cap-subject petition, USCIS opens registration each March for an October 1 start date. That means you need an accepted offer in place before March to participate in the lottery. If you're on F-1 OPT, you may be able to start sooner and bridge to H-1B status using a timely filed petition before your OPT expires, provided you apply before the extension deadline.
