Align Your Degree to Specialty Occupation Standards
Thornton Tomasetti's engineering roles require a degree directly tied to the position, such as civil, structural, or mechanical engineering. A general science degree without a clear connection to the specific role can complicate H-1B specialty occupation approval at USCIS.
Target Project Types That Match Your Background
Thornton Tomasetti organizes work around practice areas like structural engineering, performance, and resilience. Applying to roles aligned with your project portfolio, whether high-rise, infrastructure, or forensic work, signals a fit that makes internal sponsorship conversations easier to advance.
Start OPT Conversations Before Your Authorization Expires
If you're on F-1 OPT, the 60-day gap between OPT expiration and an approved H-1B can strand you. Raise the H-1B transition timeline with your hiring contact during the offer stage, not after your start date, so USCIS filing aligns with your status.
Clarify PERM Eligibility During Offer Negotiations
For EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, DOL's PERM labor certification process requires the employer to test the job market first. Ask directly whether the offered role qualifies and whether Thornton Tomasetti initiates PERM for engineers at your career level.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Open Engineering Roles by Visa Type
Thornton Tomasetti posts engineering roles across multiple disciplines and offices. Use Migrate Mate to filter current openings by the visa types you need, so you're applying to roles where sponsorship has already been confirmed rather than guessing from a generic job listing.
Prepare a Credentials Package Before Outreach
Engineering licensure, professional references from project work, and transcripts confirming your degree field all come up early in Thornton Tomasetti's hiring process. Having these ready before your first interview prevents delays that can compress the filing window before a visa deadline.

Find Engineering at Thornton Tomasetti JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Thornton Tomasetti sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Thornton Tomasetti sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying engineering roles. The company has a consistent pattern of filing H-1B petitions across its engineering practice areas. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions are tied to USCIS's April 1 filing window, your offer timing relative to that window matters significantly for planning your start date.
Which visa types does Thornton Tomasetti commonly use for Engineering roles?
Thornton Tomasetti sponsors a range of visa types for engineering positions, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican engineers, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1 for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visa pathways for permanent residency. The right category depends on your nationality, degree level, and career stage.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Engineering roles at Thornton Tomasetti?
Most engineering positions at Thornton Tomasetti require a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related engineering discipline, such as civil, structural, mechanical, or geotechnical engineering. Project experience relevant to the firm's practice areas, such as structural analysis, forensic investigation, or building performance, strengthens your application. Professional Engineer licensure is valued for senior roles.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Thornton Tomasetti?
You can browse and apply for engineering roles at Thornton Tomasetti through Migrate Mate, which lists current openings filtered by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm sponsorship availability before applying. When you apply, tailor your resume to the specific practice area and project type the role covers, and be prepared to discuss your visa timeline and status early in the process.
How do I plan my timeline when transitioning from F-1 OPT to H-1B at Thornton Tomasetti?
USCIS opens H-1B cap registrations in March for an October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before October 1 and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protections can extend your work authorization through the waiting period. Start your conversation with Thornton Tomasetti's HR team about H-1B filing no later than your offer acceptance, ideally months before the registration window opens.
