Align your credentials with PE licensing expectations
Thornton Tomasetti values engineers on a path toward Professional Engineer licensure. Having your EIT certification or FE exam results documented before applying signals you understand the U.S. credentialing track, which matters to consulting firms evaluating long-term sponsorship investment.
Target project teams matching your engineering discipline
Thornton Tomasetti organizes Civil Engineering work across structural, transportation, and resilience practices. Applying to postings aligned with your specific discipline, not just the general Civil Engineer title, positions you as a precise fit rather than a generalist candidate.
Understand how TN and E-3 skip the lottery entirely
If you're Canadian, Mexican, or Australian, Civil Engineering qualifies under TN and E-3 categories respectively. Unlike H-1B, these aren't lottery-dependent, so you can start employment much faster. Confirm your degree field maps cleanly to the DOL's specialty occupation criteria for civil engineers.
Clarify OPT and STEM extension timing before your offer
F-1 students with a STEM-designated civil engineering degree get up to 24 additional months of OPT beyond the standard 12. Raise your OPT end date and STEM eligibility with Thornton Tomasetti's HR team early, so H-1B cap-gap planning doesn't create a last-minute gap in your work authorization.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Civil Engineer roles by visa type
Thornton Tomasetti posts Civil Engineer openings across multiple practice areas and offices. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles where your visa category is sponsored, so you're not cold-applying to postings that won't move forward for international candidates.
Prepare for PERM early if a Green Card is your goal
Consulting firms like Thornton Tomasetti can initiate PERM labor certification under EB-2 or EB-3 once you're established in role. The DOL process requires documenting that no qualified U.S. worker was displaced, so your performance record and tenure both factor into the timing of that conversation.

Find Civil Engineer at Thornton Tomasetti JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Thornton Tomasetti sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineers?
Yes, Thornton Tomasetti sponsors H-1B visas for Civil Engineers. Civil engineering meets USCIS specialty occupation criteria because the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. Because H-1B is subject to the annual cap and lottery, timing your application cycle and securing your offer before the April registration window matters.
How do I apply for Civil Engineer jobs at Thornton Tomasetti?
You can apply directly through Thornton Tomasetti's careers portal, where postings are organized by practice area and office location. To narrow results to roles where visa sponsorship is confirmed, browse Thornton Tomasetti's Civil Engineer openings on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for sponsored positions so you're not pursuing roles that won't support international candidates.
Which visa types does Thornton Tomasetti sponsor for Civil Engineer roles?
Thornton Tomasetti sponsors a range of visa types for Civil Engineers, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1 for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visas for permanent residence pathways. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and where you are in the immigration process.
What qualifications does Thornton Tomasetti expect from Civil Engineer candidates?
Thornton Tomasetti typically expects a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related discipline, with preference for candidates who hold or are actively pursuing EIT certification as a step toward Professional Engineer licensure. Relevant project experience in structural analysis, infrastructure design, or construction administration strengthens your application, particularly for roles tied to specific practice groups within the firm.
How do I plan my timeline if Thornton Tomasetti sponsors my H-1B as a Civil Engineer?
H-1B cap registrations open in March, with the lottery typically run shortly after. If selected, the earliest employment start date is October 1. That means you'd want your offer finalized by late February or early March. If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, your cap-gap protection under a timely filed H-1B petition can bridge any gap between your OPT expiration and that October start date.
