Get your teaching credentials evaluated early
Arizona requires state licensure for K-12 instructors, and foreign degree evaluations through a NACES-approved agency can take weeks. Start this process before you apply so credential gaps don't stall an offer.
Target TUSD's hard-to-fill subject areas
Districts sponsor visas most readily for roles they struggle to fill locally. TUSD has historically faced shortages in STEM, special education, and bilingual instruction. Aligning your application to these areas strengthens your sponsorship case.
Find open Instructor roles through Migrate Mate
Search Instructor openings at Tucson Unified School District on Migrate Mate to filter specifically for visa-sponsoring positions, so you're only spending time on roles where sponsorship is realistic.
Clarify H-1B cap-exempt status with HR before signing
Public school districts can qualify as cap-exempt H-1B petitioners under certain conditions, which means USCIS can approve your petition outside the annual lottery. Ask TUSD's HR team directly whether they file as cap-exempt before you accept an offer.

Find Instructor at Tucson Unified School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Tucson Unified School District sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, Tucson Unified School District sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles. As a public school district, TUSD may qualify as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning petitions can be filed outside the annual lottery. Confirm this directly with TUSD's HR department when you receive an offer, since cap-exempt status affects your filing timeline significantly.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Tucson Unified School District?
Applications go through TUSD's official careers portal, where postings list subject area, grade level, and required certifications. You'll need an Arizona teaching certificate or proof that you're in the process of obtaining one. Browse open Instructor positions specifically filtered for visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate to identify which roles align with your work authorization situation.
Which visa types does Tucson Unified School District commonly use for Instructor roles?
TUSD sponsors H-1B visas for Instructors in specialty occupation roles, and supports EB-2 and EB-3 green card pathways for longer-term hires. F-1 OPT and CPT are also used for early-career candidates transitioning from university programs. The right pathway depends on your current status, degree level, and how long you've been authorized to work.
What qualifications does Tucson Unified School District expect for Instructor positions?
Most Instructor roles require a bachelor's degree in the relevant subject area and an Arizona state teaching certification. Foreign degrees typically need evaluation by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service. For shortage subjects like STEM, special education, or bilingual instruction, TUSD may move faster on hiring and sponsorship when your qualifications directly address a documented staffing gap.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Instructor role at TUSD?
H-1B petitions filed cap-exempt can be approved in two to four months under standard processing, or faster with premium processing through USCIS. If TUSD pursues an EB-2 or EB-3 green card, PERM labor certification alone typically adds 12 to 18 months before the I-140 petition stage. Factor this into your timeline when negotiating a start date.
