Align your credential to Arizona requirements
Arizona requires state-issued teaching certification, and TUSD will need this before filing any visa petition. Start the Arizona Department of Education licensure process early since credential evaluation for foreign degrees can take several weeks.
Target high-need subject areas first
TUSD consistently posts openings in special education, bilingual education, and STEM subjects. Applying to these roles improves your chances of sponsorship consideration because districts prioritize visa filings where local hiring pipelines run thin.
Ask HR directly about their filing timeline
School districts file H-1B petitions on a strict academic-year cycle. Ask TUSD's HR team when they typically initiate filings so you can time your application and onboarding paperwork before the window closes.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation now
USCIS requires a U.S. bachelor's equivalent for H-1B specialty occupation status. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before your offer letter arrives to avoid delays.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Teaching roles
Browse verified Teaching openings at TUSD filtered by visa sponsorship type using Migrate Mate. It saves you from applying to postings where sponsorship isn't available, so your effort goes toward roles where a filing is actually on the table.

Find Teaching at Tucson Unified School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Tucson Unified School District sponsor H-1B visas for Teachers?
Yes, Tucson Unified School District sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching roles. TUSD is a public school district, which makes it a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions at any point in the year without waiting for the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage for international educators who missed the cap-subject registration window.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Tucson Unified School District?
Positions are posted through TUSD's official careers portal. You'll need a valid Arizona teaching certificate or proof that you've applied for one, along with your resume, transcripts, and any licensure documentation. You can also browse open Teaching roles at TUSD filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate before submitting your formal application.
Which visa types does Tucson Unified School District commonly use for Teaching roles?
TUSD most commonly uses H-1B for specialty occupation Teaching roles, particularly in subjects like special education, bilingual instruction, and STEM. The district also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for eligible candidates earlier in the hiring process. For longer-term permanent residency pathways, TUSD has sponsored Green Cards through EB-2 and EB-3 PERM labor certification for qualifying educators.
What qualifications does Tucson Unified School District expect for Teaching positions?
You'll generally need a bachelor's degree in education or a subject-specific field, plus an Arizona state teaching certificate. TUSD gives preference to candidates with experience in high-need areas such as English Language Learner instruction, special education, or bilingual classrooms. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency is required to satisfy both TUSD and USCIS documentation standards.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when hired by Tucson Unified School District?
Because TUSD is a cap-exempt public institution, H-1B petitions can be filed year-round. Standard USCIS processing runs roughly three to five months, though premium processing is available to reduce that to 15 business days. PERM labor certification for Green Card sponsorship typically takes one to two years through DOL before the I-140 immigrant petition stage begins. Starting conversations with TUSD's HR team about timeline expectations early in the hiring process helps you plan accordingly.
