Align Your Credentials With U.S. Licensing Standards
Healthcare roles at universities often require state licensure or board certification alongside your degree. Verify that your international credentials are evaluated by a NACES-recognized body before you apply, so Tufts HR isn't the first to flag the gap.
Target Roles Tied to Tufts Research Programs
Tufts operates clinical and public health research units where H-1B sponsorship is most consistently offered. Positions tied to funded research grants tend to have more flexibility on sponsorship because the budget to cover filing fees is already allocated.
Confirm the Role Qualifies as a Specialty Occupation
Not every Healthcare title at a university clears USCIS's specialty occupation standard. Roles like health educator or program coordinator can face RFEs, so confirm with the hiring manager that the position requires a specific degree field, not just any bachelor's degree.
Negotiate Timing Around the H-1B Cap Window
If you need a cap-subject H-1B, Tufts must file in April for an October 1 start. Structure your offer timeline so the position is confirmed before the March USCIS registration window, giving Tufts enough lead time to file without rushing the LCA through DOL.
Browse Open Healthcare Roles Before Reaching Out
Search Tufts Healthcare openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate so you're applying to positions already confirmed for international candidates, rather than spending time on roles where sponsorship isn't on the table.
Clarify OPT and CPT Bridging During Hiring Conversations
If you're on F-1 OPT when you apply, Tufts can bring you on board while your H-1B petition is pending. Ask the recruiter explicitly whether the role supports OPT-to-H-1B bridging, since university HR teams handle this regularly but don't always volunteer the information upfront.

Does Tufts University sponsor H-1B visas for Healthcare roles?
Yes, Tufts University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Healthcare positions. The role must meet USCIS's specialty occupation standard, meaning it requires a specific bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. Clinical research, health sciences, and public health roles tied to funded programs are among the most consistently sponsored. Tufts has an established international employment office that manages the filing process.
Which visa types are commonly used for Healthcare roles at Tufts University?
Tufts supports several visa pathways for Healthcare hires. H-1B is the most common for full-time professional roles. H-1B1 is available to Chilean and Singaporean nationals. TN status works for Canadian and Mexican citizens in specific Healthcare occupations defined under USMCA. F-1 OPT and CPT cover students in pre-hire or training phases. For longer-term employment, Tufts also files EB-2 and EB-3 green card petitions through the PERM labor certification process.
How do I apply for Healthcare jobs at Tufts University?
Applications go through Tufts's central HR portal, where positions are posted by department. To find roles already open to international candidates, use Migrate Mate to filter Tufts Healthcare openings by visa sponsorship type. When applying, tailor your materials to the specific research or clinical function the role supports, and be prepared to provide credential evaluation documentation if your degree is from outside the United States.
What qualifications are expected for Healthcare positions at Tufts University?
Expectations vary by role, but most Healthcare positions at Tufts require at minimum a relevant bachelor's degree, and many prefer or require a master's or clinical credential. Roles in clinical research typically ask for experience with IRB protocols or regulated research environments. Public health and health sciences positions may require familiarity with grant-funded program administration. State licensure is required for any clinically licensed role in Massachusetts.
How do I think about timeline when targeting a sponsored Healthcare role at Tufts?
If the role requires a cap-subject H-1B, the practical start date is October 1 of the fiscal year USCIS selects your registration, which means the process effectively begins in January or February of that year. If you're on OPT, you can start working while the petition is pending through the cap-gap provision. TN and H-1B1 statuses have no annual cap and can be processed year-round, often with faster turnaround than a standard H-1B.
