Certify Your PLC and Automation Credentials Early
United Rentals evaluates Controls Technicians on verifiable technical credentials, not just work history. Get any PLC programming certifications, NFPA 70E, or Allen-Bradley credentials documented before you apply, since these directly support specialty occupation arguments in an H-1B petition.
Target Branch Locations With Fleet Expansion Activity
United Rentals prioritizes Controls Technician hires at branches actively scaling heavy equipment fleets or adding power and HVAC lines. Roles tied to expanding service lines carry stronger business necessity arguments, which strengthens the employer's case when filing a Labor Condition Application with DOL.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope Before Accepting Any Offer
United Rentals sponsors across several visa categories, but coverage varies by role level and location. Before signing, confirm in writing whether the offer includes H-1B filing, OPT extension support, and a longer-term pathway like EB-2 or EB-3 PERM, so there are no gaps in your status.
Frame Your Resume Around Systems Integration Experience
Rental and leasing operations demand technicians who can manage diverse, multi-brand equipment systems under one roof. Highlighting cross-platform controls experience, such as working across Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and Schneider systems, positions you as a specialty hire rather than a general electrician, which matters for visa classification.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Controls Technician Openings by Sponsorship Type
Not every United Rentals posting is tied to an active sponsorship commitment. Use Migrate Mate to filter open Controls Technician roles by visa type so you're targeting positions where H-1B or OPT support is already confirmed, saving you from pursuing roles that won't move forward.
Understand the PERM Timeline for EB-3 Progression
If your goal is a Green Card through United Rentals, EB-3 via PERM is the most common path for Controls Technician roles. DOL's PERM process currently runs 18 to 24 months for standard cases, so align your H-1B renewal windows with your employer's expected PERM filing schedule from day one.

Find Controls Technician at United Rentals JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does United Rentals sponsor H-1B visas for Controls Technicians?
Yes, United Rentals has an established history of H-1B sponsorship for Controls Technician roles. Sponsorship is typically tied to positions requiring a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, automation, or a closely related field. Because H-1B requires specialty occupation classification, roles with clear degree requirements and systems integration responsibilities are the strongest candidates for approval.
Which visa types are commonly used for Controls Technician roles at United Rentals?
H-1B is the primary nonimmigrant visa for Controls Technicians at United Rentals, covering candidates with qualifying engineering degrees. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for recent graduates earlier in their careers. TN is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. For permanent residence, EB-2 and EB-3 PERM are the most common immigrant pathways.
What qualifications and experience does United Rentals expect for Controls Technician positions?
United Rentals typically looks for candidates with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, or industrial automation, combined with hands-on experience programming PLCs, troubleshooting variable frequency drives, and maintaining industrial control panels. Familiarity with multi-brand equipment environments is valued given the breadth of United Rentals' rental fleet across power, HVAC, and heavy equipment lines.
How do I apply for Controls Technician jobs at United Rentals?
Start by browsing open Controls Technician positions on Migrate Mate, which filters United Rentals postings by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm sponsorship availability upfront. Tailor your application to emphasize automation systems experience relevant to large equipment fleets. If you're on OPT, flag your authorization period clearly so the recruiting team can align filing timelines with USCIS cap deadlines.
How do I manage my visa status timeline when pursuing a Controls Technician role at United Rentals?
If you're on F-1 OPT, the H-1B cap-subject filing window opens April 1 each year for an October 1 start date, meaning you need an offer in place by early March at the latest. For candidates already on H-1B with another employer, United Rentals can file an H-1B transfer, allowing you to start on the receipt notice without waiting for approval, which eliminates gaps in work authorization.
