Certify Your BAS Credentials Before Applying
CBRE's Controls Technician postings consistently reference Niagara AX/N4, Siemens, or Johnson Controls platform experience. Getting a vendor-recognized certification before you apply positions your resume above candidates with generalist HVAC backgrounds and gives hiring managers a concrete credential to cite in sponsorship justification.
Target CBRE's Facility Management Contracts Directly
CBRE wins long-term facility management contracts with corporate campuses, data centers, and healthcare systems. Controls Technician openings tied to these contracts often have more sponsorship flexibility than one-off project roles, since CBRE is investing in retained headcount rather than short-term coverage.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter CBRE Controls Openings by Visa Type
Not every CBRE Controls Technician posting is tied to a sponsoring business unit. Use Migrate Mate to filter CBRE listings by the specific visa types relevant to your status, so you're applying only to roles where sponsorship is already part of the hiring plan.
Clarify Your Status During the Offer Stage
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm with your CBRE recruiter whether the role qualifies for STEM OPT extension before accepting. Controls Technician positions under SOC codes tied to engineering or electrical work often qualify, but CBRE's HR team needs to verify E-Verify enrollment, which is required for STEM OPT authorization.
Understand How PERM Affects Your Timeline for This Role
EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship requires CBRE to complete a PERM labor certification with DOL before filing your immigrant petition. For Controls Technician roles, the prevailing wage determination and recruitment documentation process typically adds 12 to 18 months before I-140 filing, so factor that into your long-term planning.
Align Your TN Application to the Correct Category
Canadian and Mexican nationals applying for Controls Technician roles at CBRE under TN status must qualify under a listed USMCA occupation, typically Engineer or Computer Systems Analyst. Bring documentation connecting your role's control system responsibilities to that category, as CBP officers at the port of entry make the final determination.

Does CBRE sponsor H-1B visas for Controls Technicians?
Yes, CBRE sponsors H-1B visas for Controls Technician roles. The role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation given the technical degree requirements tied to building automation systems and controls engineering. Because H-1B selection goes through the annual USCIS lottery, CBRE generally initiates the process well in advance of the April registration window, so timing your offer accordingly matters.
How do I apply for Controls Technician jobs at CBRE?
Applications go through CBRE's careers portal, where Controls Technician roles are listed by region and account type. To find positions that include visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate to filter CBRE openings by your specific visa category. When applying, tailor your resume to the building automation platforms named in the posting, since CBRE's technical screening often filters on platform-specific experience before a recruiter review.
Which visa types does CBRE commonly use for Controls Technician roles?
CBRE sponsors multiple visa categories for Controls Technician positions, including H-1B, H-1B1 for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students in qualifying programs. For permanent residence pathways, CBRE has used EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship for controls professionals in long-term facility roles. The right visa depends on your nationality, degree, and where you are in your career.
What qualifications does CBRE expect for Controls Technician positions?
Most CBRE Controls Technician postings require hands-on experience with building automation systems, typically Niagara Framework, Siemens Desigo, Johnson Controls Metasys, or similar platforms. A degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field supports visa sponsorship eligibility. Field experience with HVAC controls, DDC programming, and network-connected building systems carries significant weight in the hiring process.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Controls Technician role at CBRE?
Timeline varies by visa type. H-1B sponsorship is tied to the annual USCIS lottery, with a registration window in March and an October 1 start date if selected. TN status for Canadian nationals can be obtained at the port of entry on the day of travel. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 typically takes two years or more from initiation, depending on your country of birth and DOL processing times.
