Align your credentials with U.S. academic standards
University of New England instructs in accredited degree programs, so a foreign degree often needs evaluation by a NACES-approved credential service. Get your transcript assessed early, since evaluation timelines can delay hiring decisions and petition filings.
Target departments matching your discipline
UNE hires Instructors across health sciences, social work, education, and online programs. Applying directly to departments where your subject expertise fits their curriculum strengthens your candidacy and signals that sponsorship investment aligns with a genuine programmatic need.
Understand how J-1 fits academic hiring at UNE
Universities frequently use J-1 exchange visitor status for short-term or visiting instructor roles before transitioning candidates to H-1B. Confirm with UNE's international office whether a J-1 offer comes with a two-year home residency requirement, which affects your H-1B eligibility later.
Clarify H-1B filing timing during offer negotiations
H-1B petitions for university positions are cap-exempt, meaning UNE can file year-round without waiting for the April lottery. Confirm this with HR during the offer stage so you and the department plan the start date around USCIS processing times, not the annual cap cycle.
Browse open Instructor roles using Migrate Mate
Instructor openings at UNE span multiple departments and change frequently. Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring employer listings so you're applying to active roles where international candidates are already supported through the hiring process.
Request a PERM timeline discussion before accepting
If your goal is a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, ask HR whether UNE has initiated PERM labor certifications for Instructor roles before. DOL's PERM process requires advertising the role to U.S. workers first, so starting that conversation early shapes your long-term immigration planning.

Find Instructor at University of New England JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of New England sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, University of New England sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles. As a nonprofit university, UNE qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, which means it can file petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. This significantly reduces wait times and gives both the university and the candidate more flexibility in setting a start date.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at University of New England?
Applications go through UNE's careers portal, where positions are listed by department and program area. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse currently open Instructor roles at UNE that are verified for visa sponsorship. Tailor your application materials to the specific program, since UNE hires across health sciences, education, and online-focused disciplines with different curricular priorities.
Which visa types does University of New England commonly use for Instructor positions?
UNE sponsors H-1B, J-1, TN, and F-1 OPT or CPT for Instructor roles, depending on your nationality and career stage. J-1 is common for visiting or short-term appointments, while H-1B is the standard for ongoing full-time positions. TN applies specifically to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic roles. Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is available for longer-tenured faculty.
What qualifications does University of New England expect for Instructor roles?
Most Instructor positions require at minimum a master's degree in a relevant field, with doctoral credentials preferred for roles tied to graduate programs or health sciences. UNE also values instructional experience, particularly in online course delivery given its large distance-learning footprint. Foreign degrees need to be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator to confirm U.S. equivalency before the H-1B petition can proceed.
How do I understand the timeline for visa sponsorship after receiving an Instructor offer from University of New England?
Because UNE is cap-exempt, USCIS can receive an H-1B petition at any time of year, with standard processing running several months and premium processing available for faster adjudication. Your start date should be negotiated with the department after HR confirms the petition timeline. If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, track your OPT expiration carefully, since the gap between offer and approval can affect your work authorization status.
