Verify your medical credentials meet Pennsylvania requirements
Pennsylvania requires ECFMG certification and successful USMLE completion before a medical license is granted. Confirm your credentials are verified and your licensing timeline aligns with the university's hiring process before applying.
Target UPMC-affiliated departments with J-1 waiver history
Many Medical Doctor roles at Pitt are tied to UPMC clinical programs. Departments that have sponsored J-1 Conrad 30 waivers in the past are more familiar with foreign physician hiring and often have dedicated HR pathways already in place.
Clarify whether the role is cap-subject or cap-exempt
University of Pittsburgh, as a nonprofit educational institution, qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules. This means H-1B petitions for qualifying positions can be filed at any time, not just during the April lottery window.
Request LCA wage level details before negotiating salary
The Labor Condition Application filed with DOL locks in a prevailing wage level. Ask the recruiter which wage level the position is being certified at, since this affects both your pay floor and how USCIS evaluates the petition's compliance.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Medical Doctor roles at Pitt
Filter by visa sponsorship type to surface roles where University of Pittsburgh has active openings and confirmed sponsorship willingness. This saves time you'd otherwise spend cold-emailing HR to ask whether a posting supports international applicants.
Align your EB-2 or EB-3 timeline with departmental budget cycles
PERM-based green card sponsorship requires employer-initiated recruitment and DOL certification, which can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS filing. Raise permanent residency sponsorship during offer negotiation, not after you've already started.

Does University of Pittsburgh sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes. University of Pittsburgh sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor roles, and as a nonprofit educational institution it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer. This means petitions can be filed year-round through USCIS, without waiting for the annual April lottery. Physicians hired into qualifying clinical or research positions can begin the H-1B process as soon as an offer is extended.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at University of Pittsburgh?
Positions are posted through the University of Pittsburgh's careers portal and UPMC's recruitment site, since many Medical Doctor roles are jointly affiliated. You can also browse open roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which surfaces active University of Pittsburgh postings where international applicants are welcomed. Having ECFMG certification and an active or pending Pennsylvania medical license ready will strengthen your application.
Which visa types are commonly used for Medical Doctor roles at University of Pittsburgh?
University of Pittsburgh sponsors H-1B, J-1, TN, and F-1 OPT for Medical Doctor positions, depending on the role and the applicant's background. J-1 is common for residency and fellowship programs, while H-1B is standard for attending physician and faculty roles. TN applies to Canadian and Mexican physicians in eligible specialties. EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visas are available for permanent residency sponsorship in qualifying roles.
What qualifications are expected for Medical Doctor positions at University of Pittsburgh?
Most roles require an MD or equivalent degree, ECFMG certification for internationally trained physicians, and an active or eligible Pennsylvania medical license. Board certification or board eligibility in the relevant specialty is typically required for attending positions. Academic roles may also expect research output, grant experience, or teaching history, particularly for faculty appointments within the university's health sciences system.
How do I plan my visa timeline when starting a Medical Doctor role at Pitt?
Because University of Pittsburgh is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed any time, which removes the lottery timing pressure most employers face. USCIS standard processing runs three to five months, and premium processing can reduce this to 15 business days. If you're transitioning from J-1 status, factor in Conrad 30 waiver processing with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, which can add several months before your H-1B petition can be filed.
