Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
Northwestern requires Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification for any physician trained outside the U.S. or Canada. Confirm your certification is current and your USMLE scores are on file before submitting an application to avoid delays during credentialing.
Target department-specific physician openings strategically
Northwestern's clinical hiring is decentralized across departments like neurology, oncology, and internal medicine. Search by specialty within the Feinberg faculty portal rather than broadly, since sponsorship decisions sit with individual department chairs, not a central HR team.
Distinguish J-1 waiver pathways from H-1B options early
If you completed a J-1 residency or fellowship, you face a two-year home residency requirement unless you obtain a waiver. Northwestern can sponsor an H-1B only after that obligation is resolved, so clarify your J-1 status with USCIS before negotiating an offer.
Confirm employer-paid filing fees during offer negotiation
H-1B petitions for physicians include USCIS filing fees and often premium processing costs. Ask directly during offer negotiations whether Northwestern covers these costs, since faculty and clinical staff appointments are sometimes handled differently under the same institution.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open physician roles with active sponsorship
Physician postings that include visa sponsorship aren't always flagged clearly on general job boards. Search Migrate Mate to filter Medical Doctor openings at Northwestern that are actively sponsored, saving you from applying to roles where sponsorship is unavailable.
Understand EB-2 National Interest Waiver eligibility as a physician
Physicians who commit to working in a Health Professional Shortage Area or Veterans Affairs setting may self-petition under the DOL National Interest Waiver route. Northwestern's academic medical environment and affiliated VA partnerships can support this pathway alongside employer-sponsored EB-2 or EB-3 PERM filings.

Find Medical Doctor at Northwestern University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Northwestern University sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, Northwestern University sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctors, particularly for faculty and clinical physician roles at Feinberg School of Medicine. The institution also sponsors H-1B1 and E-3 visas for eligible nationalities. Sponsorship is managed through Northwestern's international office in coordination with the hiring department, and USCIS premium processing is sometimes used to meet clinical start dates.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at Northwestern University?
Applications for Medical Doctor positions are submitted through Northwestern's official faculty and staff careers portal. Roles are posted by specialty and department, so searching by clinical area gives better results than broad title searches. You can also find Northwestern physician openings filtered by visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate, which is useful if you need to confirm sponsorship before investing time in a full application.
Which visa types does Northwestern University commonly use for Medical Doctor roles?
Northwestern sponsors H-1B, J-1, TN, E-3, and H-1B1 visas for physician roles depending on your nationality and training background. J-1 visas are common for residents and fellows. For attending physician and faculty appointments, H-1B is the standard route. Physicians on the Green Card track are typically sponsored through EB-2 or EB-3 PERM labor certification filed by Northwestern.
What qualifications are expected for Medical Doctor roles at Northwestern University?
Northwestern expects candidates to hold an MD or equivalent foreign medical degree, active Illinois medical licensure or eligibility, and ECFMG certification for internationally trained physicians. Most attending roles require completion of an accredited U.S. residency and, for subspecialty positions, fellowship training. Board certification or eligibility in the relevant specialty is standard. Academic faculty roles may also require a research or publication record.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline when starting a Medical Doctor role at Northwestern?
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start, which can create a gap if you're finishing a residency in June or July. Cap-exempt filing is available if you're moving from another qualifying institution. Work with Northwestern's international services office early, ideally three to four months before your intended start, to align the petition with your credentialing and hospital privileges timeline.
