Verify Your Credentials Through ECFMG Early
Duke's credentialing process for Medical Doctors requires ECFMG certification before any offer advances to the visa filing stage. Start this verification well before applying so credentialing delays don't stall your sponsorship timeline.
Target Roles Tied to Academic Departments
Duke recruits physicians across clinical and faculty-track positions. Roles with a research or teaching component often move faster through internal approvals because they align with Duke's cap-exempt H-1B eligibility as a nonprofit research institution.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Physician Roles
Duke posts Medical Doctor openings across specialties at different times of year. Search Migrate Mate to filter for Duke University physician roles that explicitly support visa sponsorship, so you're applying to positions already confirmed for international candidates.
Clarify Specialty Board Certification Requirements Upfront
Duke expects physicians to be board-certified or board-eligible in the relevant specialty. Confirm whether your foreign postgraduate training satisfies ABMS equivalency requirements before the offer stage, since this directly affects the LCA filing DOL will review.
Understand Duke's Cap-Exempt H-1B Advantage
As a nonprofit affiliated with a higher education institution, Duke can file H-1B petitions with USCIS outside the annual 85,000 cap. That means you're not subject to the April lottery, and petitions can be filed year-round whenever a role is filled.
Align Your J-1 Waiver Timeline with Duke's Offer
If you completed a residency on a J-1 visa, you'll need a waiver of the two-year home residency requirement before Duke can file an H-1B. Conrad State 30 and interested government agency waivers both take months, so start this process the moment you receive a conditional offer.

Find Medical Doctor at Duke University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes. Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctors and has a consistent record of doing so for clinical and academic physician roles. Because Duke qualifies as a nonprofit affiliated with a higher education institution, it can file H-1B petitions as a cap-exempt employer, meaning you don't need to win the annual lottery and filings can happen year-round.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at Duke University?
Applications for Medical Doctor positions at Duke go through Duke Health's careers portal, where roles are listed by specialty and department. Review each posting carefully for sponsorship language and confirm visa support with the recruiter early in the process. Positions are posted on a rolling basis, so checking regularly or using a filtered job board like Migrate Mate helps you catch new openings as they appear.
Which visa types does Duke University use for Medical Doctor roles?
Duke sponsors H-1B visas for most physician hires, including cap-exempt filings year-round. For Australians, the E-3 is also available and follows a similar specialty occupation standard. For permanent residency, Duke has sponsored physicians through EB-2 and EB-3 PERM-based pathways. The right visa type depends on your nationality, prior visa history, and whether any J-1 waiver obligations apply.
What qualifications does Duke expect from international Medical Doctor candidates?
Duke expects an MD or equivalent foreign medical degree, ECFMG certification, and completion of U.S. residency training in the relevant specialty. Board certification or board eligibility is typically required for attending-level roles. For research-focused physician positions, publications and fellowship training carry additional weight. Foreign postgraduate training may count toward specialty requirements but must be evaluated for ABMS equivalency.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Medical Doctor at Duke?
From a signed offer to an approved H-1B petition, allow at least three to six months under standard USCIS processing. If you need a J-1 waiver first, add another three to six months for that process alone. USCIS premium processing can reduce the H-1B adjudication window to around 15 business days, but credentialing, LCA certification with DOL, and internal approvals all happen before that step and can't be accelerated.
