Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Medical Doctor Jobs at Michigan State University Jobs
Align your medical credentials for U.S. licensing
ECFMG certification is a prerequisite for most physician roles at U.S. academic institutions, including MSU. Confirm your certification is current and that your medical school appears on the ECFMG-recognized list before applying.
Target MSU departments with recurring physician openings
MSU hires Medical Doctors across its College of Human Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Sparrow Health affiliates. Focusing your search on these clinical and academic units puts you in front of the hiring managers who actually control sponsorship decisions.
Request H-1B filing details early in negotiations
MSU's international hiring involves its immigration compliance office. During the offer stage, ask whether they're filing cap-subject or cap-exempt. Academic medical institutions typically qualify for cap-exempt status, which means no lottery and year-round filing.
Use Migrate Mate to filter physician roles by sponsorship type
Not every MSU physician posting lists visa support upfront. Use Migrate Mate to surface Medical Doctor roles at MSU filtered by the visa categories you need, saving you time on applications that won't lead anywhere.
Prepare your PERM documentation if pursuing a Green Card
MSU sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 green cards for qualifying physician roles. The PERM labor certification process through DOL requires detailed documentation of your qualifications and the role's requirements, so gather your transcripts, licenses, and employment history before your employer initiates the process.

Find Medical Doctor at Michigan State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Michigan State University sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes. MSU sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor roles and typically qualifies as a cap-exempt employer because of its status as a nonprofit research and academic institution. That means petitions can be filed at any point in the year without waiting for the annual lottery, which is a significant advantage over private-sector employers.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at Michigan State University?
Applications go through MSU's official careers portal, where physician roles are listed by college or department. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse Medical Doctor openings at MSU filtered by visa sponsorship type. Tailoring your CV to reflect both clinical experience and, where applicable, research or teaching contributions strengthens applications for academic medical positions.
Which visa types does Michigan State University commonly use for Medical Doctor roles?
MSU sponsors a range of visa categories for physician hires, including H-1B, J-1, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT, and Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality, your training history, and whether the role is primarily clinical, research-focused, or academic.
What qualifications does Michigan State University expect for Medical Doctor positions?
MSU generally requires an MD or DO degree from an accredited institution, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, and an active or eligible Michigan medical license. Roles tied to its College of Human Medicine or College of Osteopathic Medicine may also expect board certification in a relevant specialty and, for faculty-track positions, a demonstrable research or teaching background.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Medical Doctor role at MSU?
For H-1B petitions, USCIS standard processing runs several months, though MSU can request premium processing to reduce that to 15 business days. If your role requires PERM labor certification before a Green Card filing, the DOL process alone can take 12 to 18 months. Coordinating your start date and any licensing requirements with MSU's immigration office early is essential to avoid gaps.
