Align your credentials to UTMB's clinical physics needs
UTMB hires Physics professionals across both research and clinical settings. If your background touches medical physics, radiation oncology, or imaging sciences, emphasize board eligibility or ABR certification in your application materials, these credentials carry real weight in academic medical center hiring.
Target roles with existing H-1B filing history
Academic medical centers file LCAs with DOL for each H-1B position. Search the OFLC disclosure database by employer name and job title to confirm UTMB has filed for Physics-related roles before approaching them about sponsorship. This shows you've done serious homework.
Initiate sponsorship conversations during the offer stage
UTMB's HR and legal team handles visa filings centrally. Once you reach the offer stage, ask directly which visa categories they process in-house. For Physics roles, H-1B and TN are the most practical paths depending on your citizenship, and knowing their internal process early prevents delays.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active Physics openings
Physics positions at academic medical centers don't always surface on general job boards. Browse UTMB's sponsorship-verified Physics listings on Migrate Mate to find roles actively open to international candidates, so you're applying where the path to sponsorship is already established.
Plan your OPT timeline around UTMB's hiring cycles
UTMB typically recruits for academic and research Physics roles on a semester-aligned schedule. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your end date against their expected start date. STEM OPT extension gives you up to 36 months total, but your employer must be E-Verify enrolled, which UTMB is.
Prepare a degree equivalency letter for TN eligibility
TN status for Physicist roles requires a qualifying degree in physics or a closely related field. If your degree title doesn't explicitly say 'physics,' a credentials evaluation letter from a NACES-approved agency helps UTMB's counsel confirm TN eligibility before they commit to filing.

Find Physics at University of Texas Medical Branch JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Texas Medical Branch sponsor H-1B visas for Physics roles?
Yes, University of Texas Medical Branch sponsors H-1B visas for Physics positions. As a large academic medical institution, UTMB operates as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, which means it can file H-1B petitions year-round without being subject to the annual lottery. This is a meaningful advantage for international candidates, since cap-exempt filings can be submitted at any time and typically have shorter processing timelines than cap-subject petitions.
How do I apply for Physics jobs at University of Texas Medical Branch?
Applications for Physics roles at UTMB go through the institution's official careers portal. Tailor your CV to highlight domain-specific experience relevant to the role, whether that's medical physics, radiation science, or research instrumentation. If you need visa sponsorship, address it early in your communications with the hiring department. You can also browse sponsorship-verified Physics openings at UTMB through Migrate Mate before applying directly.
Which visa types does University of Texas Medical Branch commonly use for Physics positions?
UTMB supports several visa categories for Physics hires. H-1B is the most common for long-term employment, and because UTMB qualifies as a cap-exempt institution, filings aren't restricted to the annual lottery window. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for students completing degrees. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose physics credentials align with DOL's TN occupational categories. The right path depends on your citizenship and career stage.
What qualifications does University of Texas Medical Branch expect for Physics roles?
Expectations vary by role level. Research and faculty Physics positions typically require a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related discipline, along with a publication record or demonstrated lab experience. Clinical medical physics roles often require or prefer board certification through the American Board of Radiology. For applied or support-level Physics positions, a master's degree combined with relevant technical experience may be sufficient depending on the specific department.
How do I navigate the visa sponsorship process timeline for a Physics role at UTMB?
Once UTMB extends an offer, their HR team coordinates with immigration counsel to initiate filing. For H-1B transfers or cap-exempt petitions, USCIS standard processing typically runs two to four months, with premium processing available to shorten that window. If you're transitioning from OPT, confirm your authorization end date lines up with the expected start date. Raise the sponsorship conversation before or during the offer stage, not after, so there's no gap in your work authorization.
