Frame Your Portfolio Around Institutional Audiences
UW Communications teams produce content for faculty, students, donors, and government stakeholders simultaneously. Tailor writing samples and campaign examples to show you can shift tone and format across these distinct audiences, not just consumer-facing work.
Confirm LCA Posting Requirements Before Interviewing
As a public university, UW must post the Labor Condition Application at the worksite before USCIS filing. Ask HR which department unit your role falls under, since LCA requirements apply at the position level and can affect your start date timeline.
Target Departments With Ongoing Communications Headcount
UW's largest communications hiring happens through central University Marketing and Communications, UW Medicine, and individual school communications offices. Applying directly to department-level postings rather than only central HR listings increases your chances of finding active requisitions.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Open Communications Roles
UW posts communications positions across multiple portals and departments, making it easy to miss active roles. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified open Communications positions at UW filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're applying to roles confirmed to support international candidates.
Align Your Degree Field to the Specialty Occupation Standard
USCIS requires H-1B roles to qualify as specialty occupations. For communications positions, your degree should be in communications, journalism, public relations, or a directly related field. A general liberal arts degree without a clear connection to the role can create petition complications.
Negotiate Your Start Date Around H-1B Cap Deadlines
If you need cap-subject H-1B sponsorship, UW must file during the April registration window for an October 1 start. Receiving an offer in June or July means a minimum four-month wait. Build that gap into your start date discussion with the hiring team early.

Find Communications at University of Washington JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Washington sponsor H-1B visas for Communications?
Yes, University of Washington sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Communications roles. As a large research university and cap-exempt institution through its nonprofit and higher education status, UW can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery window, meaning eligible candidates can start at any point in the year rather than waiting for an October 1 start date.
How do I apply for Communications jobs at University of Washington?
Positions are posted through UW's official jobs portal at careers.uw.edu, but department-level communications roles are also listed separately through units like UW Medicine and individual schools. Migrate Mate aggregates verified open Communications roles at UW filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, which makes it easier to identify active positions without manually checking multiple portals.
Which visa types does University of Washington commonly use for Communications roles?
UW sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, J-1, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Communications positions, as well as immigrant pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-term employees. E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and offers a straightforward path. TN covers Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying occupations. J-1 is common for visiting communications professionals on exchange programs.
What qualifications does University of Washington typically expect for Communications roles?
Most Communications positions at UW require a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field. Roles focused on research communications or health sciences outreach often expect familiarity with academic writing conventions and stakeholder-specific messaging. Digital content and social media roles increasingly require demonstrated analytics experience alongside traditional writing and editing credentials.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for a UW Communications role?
Because UW is a cap-exempt employer, H-1B filings aren't bound by the April lottery window, which removes the biggest timing constraint most applicants face. Plan for USCIS processing of six to eight months under standard service, or two to three weeks with premium processing. F-1 OPT candidates should confirm their OPT authorization end date against the expected offer timeline before accepting a role.
