Translate your credentials for U.S. academic standards
If your degree was earned outside the U.S., request a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service. Utah State hiring committees compare international qualifications to U.S. equivalents, so a formal evaluation strengthens your application before the interview stage.
Target roles requiring specialized disciplinary expertise
Utah State prioritizes Education hires with expertise tied to a specific academic department or research area. Roles attached to grants or active research programs are more likely to generate H-1B sponsorship, since the specialty occupation standard is easier to establish.
Find open Education roles through Migrate Mate
Browse current Education openings at Utah State University on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers. You can identify which roles align with your visa type before investing time in a full application.
Understand J-1 versus H-1B trade-offs early
Utah State commonly places visiting scholars and postdoctoral researchers on J-1 status. If your role qualifies for H-1B instead, ask the international office which category applies, since J-1 Exchange Visitor status can carry a two-year home residency requirement that affects future Green Card eligibility.
Confirm LCA filing before accepting an offer
Before your H-1B petition reaches USCIS, your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL certifying prevailing wage compliance. Ask Utah State's Office of Human Resources to confirm the LCA is certified before you give notice at any current employer.
Build your tenure-track case during postdoc or visiting appointments
Many Utah State Education hires begin on visiting or postdoctoral contracts before transitioning to tenure-track roles. Establishing a publication record and departmental relationships during that initial appointment significantly strengthens a future PERM-based Green Card filing.

Find Education at Utah State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Utah State University sponsor H-1B visas for Education roles?
Yes, Utah State University sponsors H-1B visas for Education positions that meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Faculty, instructional design, and certain academic support roles commonly qualify. Sponsorship is coordinated through Utah State's international employment office, which handles the Labor Condition Application with DOL and the petition filing with USCIS.
How do I apply for Education jobs at Utah State University?
Applications are submitted through Utah State University's official careers portal, where Education roles are posted by department. Tailor your application to the specific academic unit, emphasizing research focus, teaching experience, or student services expertise as the role requires. If you need visa sponsorship, flag that clearly in your cover letter so the hiring committee can involve the international office from the start of the process.
Which visa types does Utah State University commonly use for Education positions?
Utah State University uses several visa categories for Education hires. H-1B is standard for full-time faculty and professional staff in specialty occupations. J-1 covers visiting scholars, research fellows, and exchange-based appointments. F-1 OPT and CPT support students transitioning into campus roles. For permanent positions, the university has supported EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Utah State University expect for sponsored Education roles?
Expectations vary by role, but tenure-track faculty positions typically require a terminal degree such as a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in the relevant discipline. Academic advising and instructional support roles generally require at least a master's degree plus direct experience in higher education. For H-1B sponsorship specifically, USCIS requires the position to have a direct relationship between the degree field and the job duties, so a closely matched academic background matters.
How long does the sponsorship process take for Education roles at Utah State University?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B petitions filed under standard processing with USCIS take roughly three to six months, and the process cannot begin until the DOL certifies the Labor Condition Application, which adds two to four weeks. PERM labor certification for Green Card sponsorship typically takes over a year before an I-140 petition can be filed. Use Migrate Mate to identify open Education roles at Utah State so you can assess timing against your current visa status.
