Align your credentials to USU's specialty occupation standard
H-1B eligibility for Instructional Assistant roles depends on demonstrating a direct link between your degree field and the specific instructional duties. Document how your academic background maps to the course subject matter you'd be supporting, not just teaching broadly.
Target departments with recurring instructional hiring
USU posts Instructional Assistant openings across STEM, business, and liberal arts departments throughout the academic year. Focus your applications on departments aligned with your degree, since hiring managers in higher education weigh subject-matter fit heavily when evaluating international candidates.
Start OPT applications before your program ends
USCIS recommends filing your OPT application up to 90 days before your program end date. For Instructional Assistant roles at USU, timing your OPT start to align with a semester hire cycle gives you the most runway before cap-gap or H-1B transition pressures arise.
Ask HR directly about PERM labor certification timelines
EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship for university staff roles requires DOL's PERM process, which can take 12 months or more. Confirm with USU's HR or international office early in the offer stage whether the role qualifies and what the department's track record looks like.
Browse open Instructional Assistant roles on Migrate Mate
USU posts Instructional Assistant positions across multiple departments on a rolling basis. Use Migrate Mate to filter for open roles at USU by visa type so you're targeting positions where sponsorship is already part of the hiring framework, not negotiating it from scratch.
Prepare your J-1 waiver strategy before accepting an offer
If you're finishing a J-1 exchange program subject to the two-year home residency requirement, you'll need a waiver before USU can file an H-1B on your behalf. Identify your waiver path, whether through a no-objection statement or a Conrad 30 equivalent, before the offer stage.

Find Instructional Assistant at Utah State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Utah State University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructional Assistants?
Yes, Utah State University sponsors H-1B visas for Instructional Assistant positions where the role qualifies as a specialty occupation. The role must require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field directly related to the instructional duties. USU's international services office handles the petition, and your department's hiring manager coordinates with HR to initiate the process once an offer is extended.
How do I apply for Instructional Assistant jobs at Utah State University?
Applications go through USU's official employment portal at jobs.usu.edu. Search for Instructional Assistant postings by department or keyword. Each listing specifies required qualifications and whether the position is eligible for visa sponsorship. If you want to filter specifically for roles open to international candidates across USU's departments, Migrate Mate lets you browse current openings by visa type.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructional Assistant roles at Utah State University?
The most common pathways are F-1 OPT and CPT for students still in or recently completing a degree program, J-1 for exchange scholars, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying education-related occupations, and H-1B for longer-term employment. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship is available for permanent roles, typically after an initial period of H-1B employment.
What qualifications does Utah State University expect for Instructional Assistant positions?
Most Instructional Assistant roles at USU require at least a bachelor's degree in the relevant subject area, and graduate-level coursework or a master's degree is often preferred for positions supporting upper-division or graduate courses. Practical teaching or tutoring experience strengthens your application. For visa sponsorship purposes, your degree must align closely with the specific instructional duties of the role, not just general education credentials.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Instructional Assistant role at USU?
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months, though premium processing can reduce that to 15 business days for an additional fee. Cap-subject H-1B petitions are tied to the April lottery, so timing your offer and onboarding around that cycle matters. For PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, the DOL process alone typically takes 12 to 18 months before USCIS adjudication begins.
