INTRODUCTION
KOIN 6 TV/Portland’s CW, a Nexstar Group Inc. owned CBS and CW duopoly in Portland, Oregon is seeking a Digital Content Producer who will assist with the Assignment Desk.
ROLE
This role is responsible for updating the local website, discovering and curating high-performing content, crafting homepage layouts driven by data, and helping to report news.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Curate and aggregate a steady stream of interesting content that is packaged and promoted in a way that generates engagement and repeat site visitation
- Monitor all forms of media (print, TV, digital, blogs and social) and be the quick to report breaking news stories and always on the hunt for exclusive and or trending content that will grow engagement and drive loyal, local traffic
- Excellent at writing headlines that grow audience and engagement
- Prioritize packaging content that grows page views per visitor and time on site, using headline testing, metric tools and observed patterns to guide decision making
- Understand different ways to tell a story, particularly producing short videos and choosing great photos
- Evaluate website traffic trends to make decisions on both daily content needs and longer-term content curation that will grow local audience
- Build positive working relationships with newsroom staff and management, work collaboratively on enterprise content, and creating opportunities to market web content on broadcast
- Promote and distribute news content on social media platforms and through other audience engagement tools
- Monitor scanners, wires, news releases, emails, and social media for story leads
- Plan and produce live or recorded digital-exclusive content (e.g., interviews, explainers, behind-the-scenes)
- Assist with development, planning, and follow-up of news stories for all platforms
- Keep the newsroom informed of breaking news and developing stories throughout the day
- Answer phones, vet story tips, and maintain daily news logs
- Flexibility to perform duties and other tasks as assigned
Specialized Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- 2 years of experience in digital content and journalism
- Clever headline writer that gets readers to click
- Strong multi-tasking abilities
- Organized, technical problem solver and quick decision maker
- Capable of researching, interviewing and writing original news articles
- Knowledge of SEO best practices and AP Style
- Enjoys working in teams and has excellent interpersonal skills
- Ease with/ability to learn new technology independently and quickly
- Regularly meets measurements of success
- Strong understanding of Google Analytics; Chartbeat experience a plus
- Proficiency in MS Office; HTML, CSS and Photoshop experience a plus
- Strong editorial judgment and ability to identify compelling, audience-focused stories
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
- Ability to make quick decisions and remain calm under pressure
- Must be comfortable taking a leadership role while collaborating across teams
- Strong communicator; outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to a fast-paced, evolving news environment
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and overnights as needed
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Communication/Journalism or equivalent experience may substitute + 2 (two) years’ experience in television broadcast/production and/or producing content for digital sites
Familiarity with the Portland region is a plus
Understanding of multi-platform news strategies, audience engagement trends
TRAINING/EQUIPMENT:
Utilize state-of-the-art television technology; MS Outlook, E-mail, TEAMS.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
High stress environment with deadline pressures and the demands of breaking news, which can happen at any time. Position will require day-to-day multi-tasking, as well as managing multiple projects simultaneously with frequent change in direction and priority. Must be willing and able to work weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), as well as be able to work any and all shifts as necessary, including overnights/early mornings, nights, and holidays.
The employee in this position must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work near others, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement with the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET) and subject to union dues and fees.
