Field Service Controls Technician (Robotics & Automation)

About the Role
We are looking for a dedicated Field Service Controls Technician to manage the deployment, integration, diagnostics, and upkeep of sophisticated automation and robotic platforms at various client sites nationwide. This position is perfect for a hands-on technical expert who thrives on travel, enjoys tackling complex engineering problems, and values direct interaction with partners in industrial and manufacturing settings.
You will act as a primary technical authority for industrial controls, robotics, PLCs, and HMIs, ensuring seamless operation during system launches, technical support visits, upgrades, and routine maintenance tasks.
Core Duties
- Deploy, integrate, and repair robotics and automation hardware at client locations to ensure operational success.
- Identify and rectify faults within electrical controls, HMIs, PLCs, and robotic systems.
- Execute the startup and commissioning phases for newly installed automated machinery.
- Assist clients in optimizing system performance and refining programming to improve overall efficiency.
- Analyze and interpret complex wiring diagrams, control schematics, and electrical prints.
- Perform regular preventative maintenance to help ensure long-term system reliability and health.
- Work alongside engineering staff to address and resolve intricate technical challenges.
- Maintain clear records of all service actions, repairs, and technical suggestions via formal reporting.
- Educate client staff on proper equipment operation and routine maintenance protocols.
- Provide rapid response to emergency service requests to minimize equipment downtime.
- Cultivate positive professional relationships with clients by delivering high-quality technical support.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the maintenance or troubleshooting of industrial automation systems.
- Proficiency in the programming and diagnostics of PLCs.
- Strong capability in interpreting electrical control drawings and schematics.
- Advanced aptitude for mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.
- Background in robotics, automation, or industrial manufacturing environments.
- Willingness to maintain a travel schedule of up to 80%.
- Must live within a reasonable distance of a major airport.
Preferred
- Experience with Siemens or Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix/CompactLogix) PLC platforms.
- Hands-on experience with robotics (KUKA, Fanuc, ABB, Universal Robots, Yaskawa, etc.).
- Competency in HMI troubleshooting and development.
- Experience with motion control, VFDs, and servo drives.
- Familiarity with industrial networking protocols like Profinet, EtherNet/IP, or DeviceNet.
- Prior experience in a field service role supporting external customer sites.
- Associate degree or technical certification in Mechatronics, Electrical Technology, Automation, or a related field.
