Counselor Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a counselor in Alaska?
Becoming a licensed counselor in Alaska requires a master's degree in counseling or a related field, followed by supervised post-graduate clinical hours and passage of the National Counselor Examination or a comparable exam recognized by the Alaska Board of Professional Counselors. The Board oversees licensure at the Licensed Professional Counselor level, and applicants must apply directly through the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing. Substance use counselors follow a separate credentialing track through the Alaska Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor Association.
Which companies hire counselors in Alaska?
Companies currently hiring counselors in Alaska include Providence, US Department of Veterans Affairs, and Leidos, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alaska's counselor hiring is particularly concentrated among tribal health organizations, state-run behavioral health programs, and nonprofit community mental health centers that serve both urban and rural populations.
Which Alaska cities have the most counselor jobs?
Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Alaska are the Alaska cities with the most counselor openings. Anchorage drives the largest share of listings as the state's most populous metro and home to major health systems and behavioral health nonprofits, while Fairbanks and Juneau see steady demand tied to regional medical centers, tribal health programs, and state government offices anchored in those communities.
Are there remote counselor jobs in Alaska?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields, since much counseling work involves direct client contact. About 5% of counselor openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting telehealth growth across the state. Roles most likely to be remote are those serving rural and bush communities through telehealth platforms, where in-person access is limited by geography.
How can I get hired as a counselor in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a counseling internship or practicum placement completed during your graduate program, ideally with an Alaska employer like a community behavioral health center or tribal health organization. Look for post-graduate residency or associate counselor positions at organizations such as Southcentral Foundation or the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, which regularly bring on candidates still accruing supervised hours. Adjacent roles such as case manager, behavioral health technician, or peer support specialist let you build documented clinical exposure while you work toward full licensure.
Where can I find and apply to counselor jobs in Alaska?
You can find and apply to counselor jobs in Alaska on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit your background.
