Pharmacy Technician Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pharmacy technician in Alaska?
You must register with the Alaska Board of Pharmacy before working as a pharmacy technician in the state. Registration requires a completed application and passing a background check. Most employers also require or strongly prefer national certification through the PTCB or ExCPT exams. A high school diploma is the baseline education, though many Alaska hospital employers prefer candidates who have completed an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
How much do pharmacy technicians make in Alaska?
Pharmacy technicians in Alaska earn a median of about $52,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $40,820 for the lowest 10% to over $70,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pharmacy technicians in Alaska?
Alaska pharmacy technician roles are posted by Walgreens, Safeway, and CVS Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hospital systems and long-term care facilities in Anchorage account for a large share of consistent openings alongside retail pharmacy chains operating statewide.
Which Alaska cities have the most pharmacy technician jobs?
Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Homer have the most pharmacy technician openings in Alaska. Anchorage drives the largest share because it is home to the state's major hospital systems, the highest concentration of retail pharmacy locations, and the primary long-term care facilities, while Fairbanks and Juneau generate steady demand through their regional medical centers and community health networks.
Are there remote pharmacy technician jobs in Alaska?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of pharmacy technician openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, which reflects the hands-on, dispensing-focused nature of most pharmacy technician roles. The positions most likely to allow remote work are prior authorization specialist roles and telepharmacy support positions where direct medication handling is not required.
How can I get hired as a pharmacy technician in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a pharmacy technician trainee or technician-in-training role at a retail pharmacy or regional hospital while simultaneously completing your Alaska Board of Pharmacy registration. Providence Alaska Medical Center and Bartlett Regional Hospital have periodically run on-the-job training programs for entry-level candidates. Candidates coming from related roles such as medical assistant, pharmacy clerk, or pharmacy aide have a strong foothold, and completing an accredited pharmacy technician program or obtaining PTCB certification before applying gives a measurable edge even without paid experience.
