Pharmacy Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pharmacy technician in Texas?
You must register with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy before working as a pharmacy technician in Texas. Registration requires completing a Board-approved training program or on-the-job training through an accredited pharmacy, then passing a criminal background check. Most employers also expect or require national certification through the PTCB or NHA ExCPT. A high school diploma or equivalent is the baseline education requirement for registration.
How much do pharmacy technicians make in Texas?
Pharmacy technicians in Texas earn a median of about $45,900 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $35,920 for the lowest 10% to over $59,260 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pharmacy technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring pharmacy technicians in Texas right now include CVS Health, Walgreens, and Houston Methodist, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large hospital networks and the high concentration of retail pharmacy locations across the state make it one of the more active hiring markets in the country.
Which Texas cities have the most pharmacy technician jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and Austin have the most pharmacy technician openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because of their size, dense retail pharmacy footprints, and large hospital systems, while San Antonio's military medical infrastructure and growing healthcare sector support steady demand across retail, hospital, and specialty settings.
Are there remote pharmacy technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Most pharmacy technician work is hands-on and requires physical presence in a dispensing or clinical environment. About 0% of pharmacy technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are concentrated in specialty functions like prior authorization, medication therapy management, or telepharmacy support roles.
How can I get hired as a pharmacy technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a trainee or technician-in-training position at a high-volume retail pharmacy, where on-the-job training counts toward Texas State Board of Pharmacy registration requirements. Large Texas hospital systems like UT Health, Baylor Scott and White, and HCA Houston Healthcare periodically run technician apprenticeship or pharmacy aide programs that are designed for candidates without prior experience. Earning your PTCB certification before applying, even without work history, gives you a meaningful edge over other entry-level candidates.
Where can I find and apply to pharmacy technician jobs in Texas?
