Therapist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a therapist in Texas?
Becoming a licensed therapist in Texas requires a master's degree in a clinical field such as counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, followed by supervised post-graduate hours and a licensing exam through the relevant Texas board. Mental health counselors apply through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors for the LPC credential, social workers through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners for the LCSW, and marriage and family therapists through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists for the LMFT.
Which companies hire therapists in Texas?
Employers hiring therapists in Texas right now include Rehab Employee Services, Houston Methodist, and Baylor Scott & White Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's size and population mean that both large integrated health systems and independent behavioral health networks maintain consistent therapist hiring throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most therapist jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio have the most therapist job openings in Texas, driven by the concentration of major hospital systems, community mental health centers, and school districts in those metros, with Houston and Dallas in particular anchoring large behavioral health networks that generate consistent demand across clinical, school-based, and outpatient settings.
Are there remote therapist jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, because telehealth has become a widely accepted model for outpatient mental health and substance use counseling. About 2% of therapist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly Texas providers have adopted virtual care delivery. Individual, couples, and group talk therapy sessions are the roles most commonly offered on a fully remote basis.
How can I get hired as a therapist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a supervised associate-level position, such as an LPC Associate or LCSW candidate role, which allows you to accumulate the supervised hours required for full licensure while working in a paid clinical role. Large Texas systems like UTHealth Houston and community mental health centers operate graduate internship and post-graduate residency programs specifically for candidates without independent licensure. Roles such as behavioral health technician, case manager, or crisis counselor at Texas community mental health centers also serve as common lateral entry points that transition into licensed therapist tracks.
Where can I find and apply to therapist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to therapist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Find roles that match your license type, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
