Therapist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a therapist in California?
Becoming a therapist in California requires earning a master's or doctoral degree in a qualifying field and then registering with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as an associate or intern to begin accruing supervised clinical hours. After completing the required hours, candidates sit for the California clinical licensure exams to earn credentials such as the LCSW, MFT, or LPCC. The BBS oversees all registration, examination, and licensure for California therapists.
Which companies hire therapists in California?
Employers hiring therapists in California right now include CommonSpirit Health, Sutter Health, and HealthPRO Heritage, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and mix of public health systems, nonprofit community agencies, and private group practices means consistent openings across a wide range of settings and specialties.
Which California cities have the most therapist jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego consistently post the most therapist openings in California. Los Angeles dominates by sheer population and the density of county-run mental health programs, large hospital systems, and private group practices, while San Francisco and San Diego draw significant hiring through integrated health networks, university medical centers, and community behavioral health agencies serving those metro regions.
Are there remote therapist jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields. About 4% of therapist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely telehealth has been adopted across the state. Individual therapy, case management, and care coordination roles are the most frequently offered in a fully remote format, particularly within large behavioral health platforms and insurance-based practices.
How can I get hired as a therapist in California with little or no experience?
Registering as an associate or intern with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences is the most realistic first step, because it lets you apply to paid associate-level roles while you accumulate supervised hours. County behavioral health departments, nonprofits such as Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, and community health centers across California regularly hire registered associates. Completing a practicum or field placement at a California clinic, or transitioning from a case manager or behavioral health technician role, also opens the door to supervised clinical positions.
Where can I find and apply to therapist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to therapist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Search the listings to find roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
