Clinical Registered Nurse Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical registered nurse in California?
You become a clinical registered nurse in California by completing an accredited nursing program, either an associate degree in nursing or a bachelor of science in nursing, and then passing the NCLEX-RN exam. Licensure is issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing, which requires a completed application, verified education, and exam results. California does not participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a California-specific license is required to work in the state.
How much do clinical registered nurses make in California?
Clinical registered nurses in California earn a median of about $140,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $101,260 for the lowest 10% to over $213,320 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire clinical registered nurses in California?
Employers hiring clinical registered nurses in California right now include Stanford Health Care, Prime Healthcare Services, and Sharp HealthCare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale and density of large integrated health systems means openings appear consistently across urban and suburban locations throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most clinical registered nurse jobs?
Palo Alto, San Diego, and Fresno have the most clinical registered nurse openings in California. Los Angeles and the Bay Area drive volume through their concentration of large academic medical centers and regional hospital networks, while San Diego's mix of military-affiliated hospitals, research institutions, and community health systems sustains steady demand independent of the major northern and southern metro markets.
Are there remote clinical registered nurse jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Clinical registered nursing is a hands-on bedside role, so most positions require in-person presence. About 3% of clinical registered nurse openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles tend to concentrate in care management, utilization review, and telephonic triage functions rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a clinical registered nurse in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new graduate residency program, which major California systems including Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and Cedars-Sinai run specifically to bring newly licensed RNs into clinical practice with structured mentorship. Applying to med-surg or telemetry units is the most common starting point, as those floors hire new graduates regularly. Holding a current California Board of Registered Nursing license and a BLS certification before applying strengthens any entry-level candidacy, and prior experience as a certified nursing assistant or patient care technician is a recognized credential that many California hiring managers value.
Where can I find and apply to clinical registered nurse jobs in California?
You can find and apply to clinical registered nurse jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience level and specialty, and apply directly.
