Counselor Jobs in Arizona: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a counselor in Arizona?
Becoming a licensed counselor in Arizona requires earning a master's degree in counseling or a related field, then applying through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners, which oversees licensure for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists. Most applicants pursue the Licensed Associate Counselor credential first, complete supervised clinical hours, and then sit for the National Counselor Examination before advancing to full Licensed Professional Counselor status.
Which companies hire counselors in Arizona?
Employers hiring counselors in Arizona right now include Grand Canyon Education, Community Medical Services, and Community Bridges, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Arizona's large behavioral health infrastructure, anchored by Maricopa County's robust community mental health system and major hospital networks, keeps demand for counselors consistent across the state throughout the year.
Which Arizona cities have the most counselor jobs?
Phoenix, Tucson, and Scottsdale account for the largest share of counselor openings in Arizona. Phoenix dominates because of its concentration of hospital systems, community behavioral health agencies, and school districts, while Tucson's University of Arizona Medical Center and county-funded mental health programs generate steady hiring, and suburban areas like Scottsdale and Mesa reflect the overflow of demand from the broader metro.
Are there remote counselor jobs in Arizona?
Yes, but they are more selective than in purely desk-based fields, since many counselor roles require in-person sessions or on-site collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. About 57% of counselor openings tied to Arizona are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. Telehealth counseling positions, particularly in substance use and outpatient mental health, represent the most common pathway to fully remote work for Arizona counselors.
How can I get hired as a counselor in Arizona with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a Licensed Associate Counselor position, which allows you to practice under supervision while accumulating the clinical hours required for full licensure in Arizona. Large Arizona employers like Valleywise Health and Community Bridges run associate and intern-level programs that welcome new graduates, and roles such as case manager, behavioral health technician, or crisis line specialist are common lateral entry points that build the clinical background Arizona employers look for in counselor candidates.
Where can I find and apply to counselor jobs in Arizona?
You can find and apply to counselor jobs in Arizona on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Arizona employers across behavioral health, school-based, and clinical settings. Search the listings to find roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
