Get Access To All JobsAutomation CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an automation internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is an integral part of your established curriculum and your DSO approves it. The role needs to map to your program's course objectives, not just your major in general. Automation roles in controls engineering, robotics, or industrial systems typically satisfy this for engineering and computer science students, but your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program.
Can I work on automation projects for a manufacturing company on CPT?
Yes. CPT isn't limited to tech or software firms. Manufacturing companies hiring F-1 students for PLC programming, process automation, or systems integration work are common CPT employers. The key requirement is that the work connects to your curriculum and your school authorizes the specific position. Confirm the employer's E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer.
How do I find automation employers who understand CPT work authorization?
Migrate Mate lets you search employers with verified LCA filing history in engineering and automation roles, which signals familiarity with work-authorization processes. Companies that have filed LCAs for similar roles are more likely to have HR teams that understand CPT documentation requirements and won't delay onboarding due to unfamiliarity with your status.
What happens if my automation CPT role changes scope after authorization?
If your responsibilities shift substantially, say, from testing automated systems to full software development, your original CPT authorization may not cover the new work. You'd need to return to your DSO with an updated offer letter reflecting the changed duties and get a new CPT endorsement on your I-20 before the role changes. Don't assume the original authorization carries over automatically.
Does using full-time CPT for an automation role affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count against OPT regardless of how long you use it. If your automation internship is full-time and extends past 12 months, plan your H-1B visa or other post-graduation visa strategy accordingly, since OPT won't be available as a bridge.
