CPT Back End Developer Jobs
Back end developer CPT roles let F-1 students build server-side systems, APIs, and databases while earning academic credit. Your DSO must authorize each position as an integral part of your curriculum before you start, and your I-20 must reflect the CPT dates. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours weekly) keeps your full 12-month OPT eligibility intact after graduation.

Get Access To All JobsBack End Developer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a back end developer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is directly tied to your enrolled coursework. Back end development work involving APIs, server architecture, database management, or distributed systems aligns with computer science and software engineering curricula. Your DSO will evaluate the specific job description against your program requirements, so bring a detailed offer letter or job scope document to your authorization meeting.
Can I do CPT as a back end developer before I have a full-time job offer?
CPT requires an actual offer letter or employer agreement specifying your start date, end date, hours, and job duties before your DSO can update your I-20 and issue authorization. You can't authorize CPT speculatively. Many F-1 students line up a part-time back end role with a startup or research lab mid-semester to avoid the full-time CPT trap that eliminates OPT eligibility.
How do I find back end developer employers who are comfortable with CPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented LCA filing history for software developer roles. Companies that have already navigated DOL labor condition applications have internal HR processes for work authorization paperwork, which makes the CPT onboarding conversation much smoother than approaching employers with no prior sponsorship experience.
Does CPT as a back end developer count toward my H-1B specialty occupation requirement?
CPT work experience can strengthen your H-1B visa petition by demonstrating you've applied your degree in a qualifying specialty occupation. Back end development typically maps to software developer SOC codes, which USCIS recognizes as specialty occupations. Document your CPT roles carefully, including job descriptions and employer letters, since that history supports your H-1B visa filing after graduation.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my back end developer role changes scope mid-term?
A material change in job duties, hours, or work location requires a new CPT authorization from your DSO and an updated I-20. Working in an unauthorized capacity, even briefly, creates an F-1 status violation. Notify your DSO immediately if your employer shifts your responsibilities significantly, such as moving you from backend infrastructure work to a product management or sales engineering function.
