Get Access To All JobsBiomedical Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Biomedical Engineer CPT role need to match my exact degree program?
Yes. CPT authorization requires the work to be an integral part of your established curriculum, not just related to your field broadly. A biomedical engineering student working in medical device R&D or clinical testing generally qualifies, but a role in unrelated software development likely won't. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your program requirements and the job description.
Can I do CPT at a startup or a small medical device company?
Yes, employer size doesn't affect CPT eligibility. What matters is that the company can provide work directly tied to your coursework and that the role is documented with a legitimate offer letter or internship agreement. Smaller biomedical firms often offer hands-on design or testing roles that map cleanly to degree requirements. Search Migrate Mate for companies with international hiring experience to reduce friction during onboarding.
What documents does a Biomedical Engineer CPT employer typically need from me?
Your employer will need your I-20 with CPT authorization listed on page two, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record for I-9 verification. Some employers in regulated industries, like FDA-registered device manufacturers, also request your SEVIS ID or a letter from your DSO confirming your full-time student status and the academic credit tied to the position.
How do I know if a biomedical engineer role qualifies as specialty occupation work relevant to future H-1B sponsorship?
Biomedical engineering appears in O*NET as a Job Zone 4 occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, which satisfies the H-1B visa specialty occupation standard. CPT experience in device design, biomechanics, or clinical systems strengthens your resume for future sponsorship. That said, whether a specific employer will sponsor an H-1B later depends on their hiring practices, not CPT participation alone.
Does full-time CPT affect my ability to apply for STEM OPT after graduation?
Full-time CPT totaling 12 or more months across your program eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely, including the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, has no effect on OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. If you plan to rely on OPT and STEM OPT for post-graduation work authorization, keep your CPT hours below full-time and confirm the classification with your DSO in writing.
