CPT Biotech Jobs
Biotech CPT jobs put F-1 students inside research labs, biomanufacturing facilities, and drug development pipelines before graduation. Your DSO must authorize CPT specifically for the role and employer, and the work must integrate directly with your degree program. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours weekly) keeps your full-time CPT eligibility intact for later.

Get Access To All JobsBiotech CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does my biotech CPT job need to relate directly to my degree major?
Yes. CPT requires the work to be an integral part of your established curriculum, meaning your academic program must have a direct connection to the biotech role. A molecular biology student working in a genomics lab clears this bar easily. A business student in the same lab would need to demonstrate curriculum integration through a relevant course, research credit, or required practicum tied to the position.
Can I do CPT at a biotech startup that has never hired an F-1 student before?
You can, but you'll carry more of the preparation work. The startup must be a legitimate U.S. employer with an EIN, must enroll in E-Verify, and must provide a formal offer letter that your DSO can use to authorize your CPT. Startups unfamiliar with I-20 endorsements sometimes need guidance on what the authorization letter must include, so build extra lead time into your timeline.
How do I find biotech companies that are already set up to hire CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search biotech employers by CPT hiring history, so you can prioritize companies that have already navigated DSO authorization and E-Verify enrollment. This is faster than cold outreach to companies that have never sponsored an F-1 student and may not know the difference between CPT and OPT.
Does using all 12 months of full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count toward that 12-month limit regardless of how long it runs. Many biotech students structure their CPT as part-time internships across multiple semesters to preserve their post-graduation OPT year.
What biotech job functions are most common for CPT placements?
CPT placements in biotech most commonly land in research and development, quality control, regulatory affairs, bioinformatics, and manufacturing process development. Lab-based roles tied to bench science align most cleanly with STEM degree programs, which simplifies DSO authorization. Regulatory affairs and bioinformatics roles at the intersection of biology and data science are increasingly common as employers seek students with dual technical skills.
