CPT Chemist Jobs
Chemist roles in pharmaceuticals, materials science, and environmental testing are well-suited for CPT because lab-based work directly maps to chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering curricula. Your DSO must authorize each position before you start, and the employer's job duties need to connect to your specific degree program.

Get Access To All JobsChemist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work experience as a chemist count toward H-1B specialty occupation evidence?
Yes. CPT work in a chemistry role can support a specialty occupation argument for a future H-1B visa petition, but only if the duties required and applied your degree-level knowledge. Ask your employer for a detailed letter describing the technical tasks you performed, the lab methods you used, and your title. USCIS reviews that documentation when evaluating whether prior experience demonstrates specialty occupation work.
Can I do CPT at a contract research organization or staffing agency placing me at a pharma site?
CPT is tied to your employer of record, which would be the staffing agency, not the end client. Your DSO authorizes CPT based on the agency's offer letter and the described duties. Confirm that the agency is enrolled in E-Verify if STEM OPT is on your timeline, and make sure the job description specifies the chemistry tasks at the placement site, not just a generic lab technician role.
How do I find chemistry employers who are familiar with CPT authorization?
Migrate Mate lets you search chemistry roles and filter by employers with F-1 work authorization history. Employers who've hired F-1 students before are more likely to understand the CPT offer letter requirements and DSO timelines, which reduces delays between your offer and your authorized start date.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the employer changes my lab assignment mid-internship?
CPT authorization is specific to the employer and the general scope of duties your DSO approved. A significant change in job function, such as moving from analytical chemistry to a manufacturing role outside your curriculum scope, may require a new CPT authorization. Notify your DSO promptly and get the updated offer letter or job description to your international student office before the change takes effect.
Does full-time CPT during the summer affect my one-year full-time CPT limit before OPT?
Yes. Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more makes you ineligible for OPT under current F-1 regulations. Summer full-time CPT counts toward that total. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect OPT eligibility regardless of duration. Track your full-time CPT hours carefully across all authorizations, and confirm the running total with your DSO before accepting a full-time chemistry role.
