Get Access To All JobsLaboratory Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Laboratory Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position directly relates to your field of study. A biology or chemistry student working in a research or clinical lab typically satisfies the integral-curriculum requirement. The connection must be documented in your CPT request, your DSO evaluates the specific duties listed in the offer letter, not just the job title.
Can I do CPT at a private commercial lab instead of a university research lab?
Yes. CPT is not limited to academic or nonprofit settings. Private labs, pharmaceutical companies, and environmental testing firms all qualify as long as the work ties to your enrolled program and your DSO approves it. Confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify, since many require it for F-1 hires regardless of CPT status.
How do I find Laboratory Technician employers who accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to browse lab technician roles filtered for employers with work-authorization filing history. Many postings that accept CPT will note F-1 eligibility directly, but you can also confirm by asking the recruiter whether the employer has hired CPT students in laboratory roles before.
Does part-time CPT in a lab count against my full-time OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, has no effect on your 12-month OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entirely. Track your authorized CPT hours carefully, especially if you hold multiple part-time lab positions across different semesters.
What happens if my lab CPT position ends before the authorized end date on my I-20?
You must stop working immediately when the position ends, even if your I-20 CPT authorization extends further. Notify your DSO so they can update your record in SEVIS. You cannot transfer unused CPT dates to a different employer or lab without a new authorization request and a revised I-20.
