Get Access To All JobsBusiness Operations Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Operations Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in business administration, operations management, or a related field and the job is listed as an integral curriculum requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program. Roles with vague or generic job descriptions are harder to authorize, so ask your employer to specify duties that map to your coursework before submitting the CPT request.
Can I work full-time as a Business Operations Manager on CPT?
Full-time CPT is permitted but carries a significant consequence: 12 months or more of full-time CPT disqualifies you from OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against your OPT eligibility. If you're planning to use OPT or STEM OPT after graduation, structure your CPT engagement to stay under that 12-month full-time threshold.
How do I find Business Operations Manager jobs where employers understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for operations roles at employers with active LCA and work authorization filing history. Employers already familiar with F-1 work authorization know the CPT-to-OPT-to-H-1B visa pipeline and won't require you to explain the process. Targeting those employers shortens onboarding conversations and reduces the risk of an offer being rescinded due to compliance concerns.
What documents does my employer need to put me on CPT?
The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT, authorization happens entirely at your school through your DSO. Your employer needs to provide a written offer letter with your start date, job title, and work location. You bring that letter to your DSO, who updates your I-20 to reflect CPT authorization. You cannot begin work until the updated I-20 is in hand.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my Business Operations Manager role changes significantly?
If your responsibilities shift substantially, for example, from process improvement to financial analysis, your DSO may need to reauthorize CPT to reflect the updated duties. Changes in employer, work location, or employment dates also require a new CPT authorization and an updated I-20. Working outside the scope of your authorized CPT terms is a status violation, so notify your DSO before any material change takes effect.
