CPT Developer Tools Jobs
Developer Tools jobs on CPT place you inside engineering teams building SDKs, CLIs, compilers, debuggers, and platform infrastructure. Your DSO must authorize each CPT position individually, and the work must connect directly to your degree program. Roles at dev-tools companies often involve systems programming, API design, and developer experience work that maps cleanly to CS and software engineering curricula.

Get Access To All JobsDeveloper Tools CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do developer tools roles qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, provided the work connects to your degree curriculum. Software engineering, computer science, and related programs typically map directly to developer-tools roles involving SDK development, compiler engineering, or platform infrastructure. Your DSO evaluates the connection between the specific job description and your enrolled coursework, so request a detailed offer letter or job scope document from the employer before starting the authorization process.
Can I do CPT at a developer tools startup that has never hired an F-1 student before?
Yes. CPT authorization depends on your school approving the curricular connection, not on the employer's prior hiring history. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. You'll want to confirm the company understands your I-20 authorization period and start date constraints, since smaller dev-tools teams may be unfamiliar with the paperwork timeline your DSO requires.
How do I find developer tools companies that regularly hire CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search developer-tools roles filtered by employers with work-authorization filing history, which signals familiarity with F-1 students. You can also use the DOL's OFLC Wage Search to identify companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for software engineering roles, which indicates experience with international hiring even if the filings are H-1B visa-related rather than CPT-specific.
Does a full-time CPT summer internship in developer tools affect my OPT?
It can. Full-time CPT used for 12 or more months in aggregate eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. A single full-time summer internship of three to four months doesn't cross that threshold, but stacking multiple full-time CPT positions across semesters can. Track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully and confirm your running total with your DSO before accepting any new full-time CPT position.
What job titles in developer tools are most commonly approved for CPT?
Roles with a clear technical and educational nexus get approved most consistently. Software engineer, tools engineer, developer experience engineer, compiler engineer, and platform engineer all map directly to CS and software engineering degree requirements. Titles that blend technical work with sales or marketing, such as solutions engineer or technical account manager, require stronger documentation showing the work is curriculum-integrated and degree-relevant rather than client-facing.
