CPT Engineering Technician Jobs
Engineering Technician CPT jobs let F-1 students apply lab, testing, and systems skills in real industry settings while their DSO-authorized work counts directly toward degree requirements. Roles in manufacturing, electronics, and civil or mechanical engineering routinely qualify, but your CPT authorization must specify the employer and start date before your first day.

Get Access To All JobsEngineering Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an engineering technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
It can, but the role must be an integral part of your current degree program, not just related to your field. Your DSO will assess whether the specific duties in the job description connect directly to your coursework. Roles involving lab testing, instrumentation, quality control, or systems troubleshooting typically qualify for engineering and technology degree programs.
Can I work part-time as an engineering technician on CPT while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as 20 hours or fewer per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility, no matter how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, which is more than 20 hours per week, used for 12 months or more eliminates OPT eligibility entirely, so track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully if you plan to use OPT later.
What documents does my employer need from me to start CPT work?
Your employer needs your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization for their specific location and the correct start date, plus your I-94 record confirming valid F-1 status. Some engineering employers will also ask for your SEVIS ID for E-Verify purposes. Never start work before your CPT start date appears on your I-20, even if the offer letter has been signed.
How do I find engineering technician employers who are open to CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters employers by verified DOL filing history so you can see which companies have actively sponsored work authorization for technical roles. Manufacturing, aerospace, civil engineering consultancies, and government contractors tend to hire CPT students regularly because they already have compliance infrastructure in place for work authorization documentation.
Does CPT as an engineering technician count toward a future H-1B petition?
The work experience itself can strengthen an H-1B visa petition by demonstrating progressive technical expertise, but CPT status has no direct bearing on H-1B eligibility or cap counting. Your employer files the H-1B petition separately through USCIS when they're ready to sponsor you. The key is that your engineering technician duties should remain consistent with a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field.
