Does a CAD Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is directly tied to your engineering curriculum. Roles involving 3D modeling, drafting, simulation, or design review for a degree program in mechanical, civil, industrial, or a related engineering field typically satisfy CPT's integral curriculum requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program and the job description you provide.
Can I do CPT for a CAD Engineer role at a remote employer in a different state?
Remote CPT is permitted at most schools, but the authorization on your I-20 must reflect the employer's primary worksite address, not your home address. Confirm with your DSO whether your program allows fully remote CPT and whether a remote arrangement still satisfies the curricular integration requirement your school applies.
How do I find CAD Engineer employers already familiar with F-1 CPT?
Migrate Mate lists CAD Engineer positions from employers with documented work-authorization experience. Focusing your search there reduces the risk of accepting an offer from an employer unfamiliar with CPT paperwork, which can delay your start date or result in a rescinded offer when HR realizes what's involved.
Does part-time CPT for a CAD Engineer role affect my full-time CPT eligibility later?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not count against your full-time CPT eligibility or your OPT. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, stay under the 12-month full-time CPT threshold, including any accumulated time across multiple employers.
What should a CAD Engineer CPT offer letter include?
The offer letter must name your employer, specify your job title as CAD Engineer or an equivalent, list your start and end dates, state whether the role is full-time or part-time, include the worksite address, and briefly describe the CAD-related tasks you'll perform. Some DSOs also require a supervisor name and a statement explaining how the role connects to your coursework.
