Get Access To All JobsHR Generalist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HR Generalist role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly relates to your degree program. HR Generalist positions typically qualify for students in human resources, business administration, organizational behavior, or industrial-organizational psychology. Your DSO makes the final call based on how well the specific job duties map to your program's learning objectives, so bring a detailed offer letter or job description to that meeting.
Can I do CPT part-time while still taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as 20 hours per week or fewer and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, more than 20 hours per week, used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most F-1 students in HR Generalist internships choose part-time CPT during the academic year to protect their post-graduation options.
What documents do I need to give my HR Generalist employer for CPT?
You'll provide your employer with your CPT-endorsed I-20, which lists the authorized employer name, start date, and end date. The employer uses this to complete your I-9 alongside your passport and visa. Make sure the employer name on your I-20 matches the legal entity name on your offer letter exactly, a mismatch will flag the I-9 and delay your start date.
How do I find HR Generalist employers who are familiar with CPT authorization?
Search Migrate Mate for HR Generalist roles filtered by employers with active LCA filing history. Employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications before already understand work authorization requirements and are more likely to have HR processes in place for onboarding CPT students without delays. Mid-size and enterprise companies with dedicated HR compliance teams tend to process CPT paperwork more efficiently than early-stage startups.
Will my CPT HR Generalist experience count toward future H-1B sponsorship?
Practical experience matters for H-1B visa petitions in two ways. First, it demonstrates that your degree field applies to the HR Generalist specialty occupation, strengthening the employer's petition. Second, if the same employer sponsors you after graduation, your CPT tenure can support the argument that the role is a genuine specialty occupation. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title, so documented project work from your CPT period is useful to preserve.
