Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Summer Intern to support our Purchasing and Inventory Management teams. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience across the full procurement lifecycle — from sourcing and purchase order processing to physical inventory verification through cycle counts. The intern will work directly with our Purchasing team and Warehouse staff, playing an active role in day-to-day operations. This role is ideal for students pursuing degrees in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field who are looking to apply classroom knowledge in a fast-paced, real-world environment.
Key Responsibilities
Purchasing Support
- Assist buyers in processing purchase orders (POs) and tracking order status from placement through receipt.
- Research and evaluate suppliers, obtain competitive quotes, and support vendor qualification activities.
- Review and reconcile purchase order discrepancies, invoices, and delivery documentation.
- Maintain and update item master data, vendor records, and purchasing logs in the ERP system.
- Support expediting efforts to ensure on-time delivery of critical materials and components.
- Assist in identifying cost savings opportunities and documenting findings for the purchasing team.
- Help prepare purchasing reports, spend analyses, and supplier performance summaries.
Cycle Count & Inventory Management
- Participate in scheduled and unscheduled cycle counts across warehouse locations and storage areas.
- Accurately count, record, and verify inventory quantities using handheld scanners or count sheets.
- Investigate and document inventory variances, escalating discrepancies to the inventory control supervisor.
- Assist in root cause analysis for count discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
- Help maintain organized and properly labeled storage locations to support inventory accuracy.
- Support the reconciliation of physical counts against system records in the ERP/WMS.
- Contribute to improving cycle count procedures and documentation standards.
Qualifications
Required
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Associate's degree program in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy — especially when working with numbers and inventory data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel (sorting, filtering, basic formulas).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Willingness to work in a warehouse or distribution environment, including standing and walking for extended periods.
Preferred
- Prior coursework or experience in procurement, logistics, inventory control, or operations.
- Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar).
- Experience with warehouse management or inventory systems.
- Basic understanding of purchasing processes including purchase orders, receiving, and accounts payable.
What You Will Learn
By the end of the internship, you will have gained practical, resume-building experience including:
- End-to-end purchasing workflow — from requisition to receipt.
- Inventory control best practices including cycle count methodologies (ABC analysis, random sampling, location-based counting).
- How to work within an ERP system to manage procurement and inventory data.
- Cross-functional collaboration with warehouse, finance, and operations teams.
- Data analysis and reporting techniques applied to supply chain metrics.
- Problem-solving in a live operational environment with real business impact.
Physical Requirements
This role involves a combination of office and warehouse work. Candidates should be able to:
- Stand, walk, and move throughout warehouse or production floor areas for extended periods.
- Lift and carry items up to 30 pounds occasionally.
- Use handheld inventory scanning devices.
- Work in varying temperature conditions typical of a warehouse environment.
Salary Range: $20/hr

Does an Inventory Specialist role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on your program. CPT is valid when the work is an integral part of your established curriculum, not just related to your major. Inventory Specialist positions typically qualify for students in supply chain management, logistics, operations, or business administration programs. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the job description and connect its duties to specific courses or program outcomes before requesting authorization.
Can I do CPT as an Inventory Specialist at a warehouse or distribution center?
Yes, warehouse and distribution center employers hire CPT students in inventory roles, and many are already familiar with I-9 and E-Verify requirements. The key is confirming the employer understands CPT is employer-specific authorization, meaning you can't transfer it to a different location or company mid-semester. Verify the work site address matches what your DSO lists on your I-20 before starting.
How do I find Inventory Specialist employers who are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Inventory Specialist roles filtered by work-authorization hiring history. Employers with a track record of sponsoring or hiring F-1 students already have HR processes in place for CPT onboarding, which reduces the back-and-forth when you present your authorization documents. Avoid employers who ask you to start before your updated I-20 is issued, since working before CPT is authorized violates your F-1 status.
Does part-time CPT as an Inventory Specialist affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT of any duration doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully if you plan to use OPT after graduation. Part-time is defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, and your I-20 will specify which category applies to your authorization.
What documents does the employer need from me to process CPT for an Inventory Specialist position?
You'll need your I-20 with the CPT authorization page, your valid F-1 visa stamp, and your passport. The employer uses these to complete the I-9 on your first day. Some employers in logistics or retail also ask for your offer letter to confirm alignment with the authorized employer name and start date on your I-20. Any mismatch between the employer name on your I-20 and the legal entity on the I-9 requires a corrected I-20 before you begin work.
