Get Access To All JobsService Supervisor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Service Supervisor role qualify for CPT authorization?
It can, but qualification depends on whether the job duties directly connect to your enrolled program. A Service Supervisor role in hospitality management qualifies easily for a hospitality or business student. The same title in a setting unrelated to your degree may not. Review the O*NET profile for Service Supervisor and bring the competency list to your DSO to confirm the curriculum tie-in before you apply.
Can I work as a Service Supervisor full-time on CPT?
Yes, but full-time CPT carries a significant consequence: if your cumulative full-time CPT reaches 12 months or more, you lose all OPT eligibility permanently. Most students in supervisor roles that run through an academic year structure their hours as part-time CPT, staying under the full-time threshold to preserve future OPT. Confirm the exact hour cutoff that your school uses to define full-time before you accept.
What documents does my employer need from me to start a CPT placement?
Your employer needs your CPT-authorized I-20, which lists the employer name, job title, authorized dates, and whether the CPT is full-time or part-time. Some employers also request a copy of your F-1 visa and passport for I-9 verification. CPT authorization must be active before your first day of work. Starting before your DSO issues the updated I-20 is an unauthorized employment violation.
How do I find Service Supervisor jobs that are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Service Supervisor openings filtered to employers with work authorization experience. Many Service Supervisor postings on general job boards don't specify CPT eligibility, so you often spend time on employers who aren't familiar with F-1 authorization. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with documented authorization history, which shortens the screening process significantly.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer changes my job duties mid-placement?
CPT authorization is tied to the specific job duties and employer listed on your I-20. If your role shifts significantly, for example from team oversight to administrative operations, your existing CPT may no longer cover the actual work. You'd need to return to your DSO for a revised authorization. Proceeding with substantially changed duties under the original CPT risks an unauthorized employment finding, which affects future visa status.
