Get Access To All JobsDepartment Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Department Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
It can, but the role must directly relate to your enrolled degree program. A Department Manager position in retail operations can qualify for a student in a supply chain or business management program if the job duties connect to specific coursework. Your DSO makes the final determination, and your employer's offer letter must describe duties that support that curricular link.
How many hours per week can I work as a Department Manager on CPT?
Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT is 20 hours or more per week, and 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT entitlement entirely. Most students in management roles negotiate part-time schedules during the semester to protect their OPT for post-graduation employment.
Can I hold a supervisory role while on CPT without violating my F-1 status?
Yes. CPT doesn't restrict your job title or whether you supervise other employees. What matters is that the role is authorized by your DSO, that it aligns with your academic program, and that you work only for the employer listed on your I-20. Taking on additional duties outside your CPT authorization or working for a second employer without separate authorization would violate your F-1 status.
How do I find Department Manager jobs where employers already understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you search Department Manager roles filtered by employers with F-1 work authorization experience. Targeting companies already familiar with CPT documentation requirements, DSO timelines, and learning agreements saves significant time compared to educating a first-time CPT employer through the offer process.
Will CPT experience in a Department Manager role help with future H-1B sponsorship?
It can strengthen your case if the duties align with a specialty occupation. Department Manager roles that require a specific bachelor's degree in a related field, such as business administration or retail management, can support an LCA filing. Use O*NET to verify the occupation's degree requirements and job zone before accepting a role with H-1B visa sponsorship as a long-term goal.
