Get Access To All JobsMaintenance Specialist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Maintenance Specialist role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the role directly relates to your degree program and your school recognizes it as an integral curricular component. Programs in facilities management, mechanical engineering technology, construction management, and related fields typically support this connection. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring a detailed job description and a written explanation of how the duties map to your coursework before requesting authorization.
Can I work full-time as a Maintenance Specialist on CPT during the school year?
Full-time CPT during the academic year is allowed under F-1 regulations, but it requires specific approval from your DSO and typically applies to co-op programs built into your curriculum. Working full-time on CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so confirm with your DSO whether your program designates a co-op term or whether part-time CPT better protects your post-graduation options.
What documents do I need to start a Maintenance Specialist CPT job?
You need an updated I-20 with CPT authorization listed for the specific employer, start date, and end date, issued before your first day of work. Your employer will use this alongside your F-1 visa stamp and I-94 to complete the I-9. Some maintenance departments at larger institutions also request your DSO contact information to verify authorization directly, so have that available.
Do Maintenance Specialist employers typically know how CPT works?
Familiarity varies. Large employers with established internship pipelines, university facilities departments, and healthcare systems tend to have HR staff experienced with I-9 and E-Verify for F-1 students. Smaller contractors may not. When you apply through Migrate Mate, you can target employers with documented work authorization experience, which reduces the risk of an offer falling through because HR isn't familiar with CPT documentation.
Is there a limit to how many CPT jobs I can hold simultaneously as an F-1 student?
USCIS does not cap the number of concurrent CPT authorizations, but each employer and position requires separate DSO authorization and a separate I-20 endorsement. Holding multiple CPT roles at once is unusual for a Maintenance Specialist track because the physical, schedule-dependent nature of facilities work makes concurrent placements difficult to manage alongside coursework. Your DSO will assess whether multiple authorizations are academically justifiable.
