Does a Crew Leader role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position integrates directly with your degree program. Crew Leader roles in agriculture, construction management, environmental science, and operations programs typically qualify when your curriculum requires supervised team management or field operations experience. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your coursework maps to the specific job duties listed in your offer letter.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Crew Leader without affecting my OPT eligibility?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count against that limit regardless of duration. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, structure your Crew Leader CPT as part-time or keep full-time CPT under 12 cumulative months across your entire degree program.
What should the offer letter include to satisfy CPT authorization?
Your DSO needs the employer's legal name, your job title, the specific duties you'll perform, your start and end dates, the number of hours per week, and the supervisor's name and contact information. For Crew Leader roles, explicitly listing team coordination, safety oversight, and task assignment responsibilities helps the DSO verify the academic connection rather than treating it as general labor.
How do I find Crew Leader employers who understand CPT work authorization?
Search Migrate Mate for Crew Leader openings and filter by employers with prior work authorization sponsorship history. Employers who have hired F-1 students before already know how to process an EAD and won't require weeks of internal legal review before extending an offer. Starting with those employers significantly shortens the time between your signed offer and your DSO authorization.
Can I switch Crew Leader employers mid-semester while on CPT?
No. CPT authorization is employer-specific. Your I-20 endorsement names the authorized employer, and working for a different company without a new CPT authorization violates your F-1 status. If you change jobs mid-semester, your DSO must issue an updated I-20 before your first day at the new employer. There is no grace period for this transition.
