Does marine electrician work qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your school's program includes coursework in electrical systems, marine technology, or a related engineering discipline, hands-on work as a marine electrician can satisfy CPT requirements. Your DSO determines eligibility based on whether the role is an integral part of your curriculum. Bring a written job description to your DSO appointment so they can make that determination quickly.
Can I do CPT at a shipyard that only offers full-time positions?
Full-time CPT is allowed, but using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your eligibility for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT, meaning under 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT no matter how long it runs. If the shipyard requires full-time hours, weigh that trade-off with your DSO before accepting the offer.
What documentation do I need to start a marine electrician CPT job?
You need a CPT-endorsed I-20 listing the specific employer and authorized dates, your original passport, and your most recent visa stamp. Some marine facilities also require proof of E-Verify completion, your SEVIS record, and a TWIC card for port access. Request all updated documents from your DSO at least two weeks before your start date to avoid delays.
How do I find marine electrician employers who are familiar with CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to identify maritime and marine service employers with documented work authorization histories. Employers who have previously filed for foreign-national workers are more likely to have HR processes in place for CPT onboarding. You can also ask your university's career services office whether they have existing relationships with regional shipyards or naval contractors.
Does the O*NET profile for marine electricians affect my CPT eligibility?
The O*NET profile for this occupation, listed under SOC code 49-2094, describes tasks like installing and maintaining electrical systems on ships and marine equipment. Your DSO uses the job description to confirm the role matches your field of study. A detailed O*NET-aligned job description from your employer strengthens the curriculum connection and makes DSO authorization straightforward.
