CPT Mental Health Counseling Jobs
Mental health counseling CPT positions let F-1 students complete supervised clinical hours that most state licensure boards require before graduation. Your DSO must authorize each placement as an integral curriculum component, so confirm your program's CPT policy and hour-tracking requirements before accepting any offer.

Does mental health counseling CPT count toward state licensure hours?
It depends on the state board and the quality of supervision your site provides. Many boards require post-degree hours under a fully licensed supervisor, and some specifically exclude pre-graduation hours. Before accepting a CPT placement, request your site's supervision structure in writing and cross-check it against the licensure requirements in the state where you plan to practice.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice instead of a hospital or clinic?
Yes, private practices are eligible CPT sites as long as your school recognizes the placement as an integral curriculum component and your DSO approves it. The practical challenge is that private practices are less familiar with CPT paperwork. You'll likely need to walk the supervisor through the I-20 authorization process and what the employer is and isn't required to file.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my placement site changes supervisors mid-semester?
A supervisor change doesn't automatically invalidate your CPT, but your program may require updated documentation confirming the new supervisor meets its credentialing standards. Notify your DSO promptly if your direct supervisor changes. If the new supervisor doesn't hold the required license, your program could determine the placement no longer qualifies as an integral curriculum component.
How do I find mental health counseling employers who understand CPT requirements?
Migrate Mate lists counseling roles at employers with established work authorization experience, which significantly reduces the time you spend explaining CPT to hiring managers. Community mental health centers, hospital outpatient clinics, and university counseling centers tend to have existing intern onboarding processes and are more likely to have worked with F-1 students before.
Can I work full-time on CPT during my final semester of a counseling program?
Full-time CPT during your final semester is allowed if your program and DSO authorize it, but be aware of the OPT consequence: 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your entire program eliminates your OPT eligibility. If you've already accumulated significant full-time CPT hours, calculate your total carefully with your DSO before committing to a full-time placement in your final term.
