Get Access To All JobsClinical Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Clinical Assistant work qualify as CPT?
Yes, provided the position is directly tied to your degree program's clinical curriculum. Your DSO must authorize it as an integral part of your coursework, typically by linking specific job duties to course objectives or a required practicum. Roles in diagnostic support, patient intake, or clinical documentation are commonly approved when the degree program includes a clinical training component.
How do I find Clinical Assistant employers who accept CPT?
Search for Clinical Assistant openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers with documented experience hiring international students on CPT and other work authorizations. Focus on healthcare networks and ambulatory care clinics, as they typically have HR teams familiar with training agreements and I-20 verification procedures required for CPT onboarding.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Clinical Assistant without affecting OPT?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so timing matters. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or less, has no impact on OPT. If your program requires a full-time clinical rotation, confirm with your DSO how many total CPT hours have already been counted toward that 12-month threshold before accepting a full-time offer.
What documents does a Clinical Assistant CPT employer need from me?
You'll need to provide your CPT-authorized I-20 showing the employer name, position title, and exact authorization dates, plus your valid F-1 visa and a government-issued ID for Form I-9 verification. Some healthcare employers also require a training agreement signed by your DSO, your department head, and a supervising clinician before your start date.
Does the O*NET classification for Clinical Assistant affect my CPT approval?
O*NET classifies Clinical Assistant roles under a specific Standard Occupational Classification code that your DSO may reference when documenting the integral-curriculum connection. If your university program lists clinical competencies that map to the O*NET job zone for this role, that alignment strengthens your DSO's authorization letter and reduces the risk of a delayed or denied CPT approval.
