CPT Paralegal Jobs
Paralegal roles at law firms, corporate legal departments, and nonprofits can qualify for CPT when your program ties the work directly to your legal studies curriculum. Your DSO must authorize each position before you start, and the role must align with your degree's learning objectives, not just your career interests.

Does a paralegal job qualify for CPT?
A paralegal role qualifies for CPT if your school determines it's an integral part of your established curriculum, not just related to your field. Programs in legal studies, pre-law, or paralegal studies typically have the clearest path. Your DSO will evaluate whether the specific job duties map to your coursework, so bring the employer's job description to your authorization meeting.
Can I do CPT at a law firm if my degree isn't in law?
Yes, if your academic program has a formal internship or practicum requirement that the paralegal role satisfies. Business, political science, and criminal justice programs have placed CPT students in law firms when the work connects to documented learning objectives. The critical factor is your DSO's assessment, not your major title. Some schools require a faculty sponsor or course enrollment to authorize non-law-degree CPT at legal employers.
How do I find paralegal employers who are familiar with CPT?
Employers who've hired F-1 students before understand the I-20 authorization process and won't mistake CPT for a work visa sponsorship request. Migrate Mate lists paralegal and legal support roles at employers with international hiring experience, which narrows your search to firms where you won't spend the interview explaining what CPT is.
Does my CPT paralegal job need to be paid?
CPT can be unpaid, but most paralegal CPT roles are paid positions. Unpaid CPT at a for-profit law firm raises wage and hour issues under the Department of Labor's internship guidelines, so most firms pay CPT paralegals at least the applicable minimum wage. Confirm compensation terms before your DSO authorizes the position, since some schools restrict unpaid CPT to nonprofit or government placements.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the employer changes my role or hours?
Any material change to your CPT position, including a title change, significant shift in duties, or move from part-time to full-time, requires a new or amended CPT authorization from your DSO. Working outside the terms listed on your I-20 CPT endorsement is a status violation. Notify your DSO before the change takes effect, not after, and get an updated I-20 reflecting the new terms.
