Does a Family Law Paralegal role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work connects directly to your degree program. Your DSO will look for coursework in legal research, family court procedures, civil procedure, or paralegal studies. Roles focused on client intake, drafting pleadings, or case file management typically satisfy that academic connection. The authorization is degree-specific, so a business or unrelated STEM degree makes the case harder to support.
Can I do CPT at a solo-practitioner family law firm?
You can, but small or solo firms often lack dedicated HR staff familiar with CPT paperwork. Before accepting an offer, confirm the employer can provide an offer letter that describes your duties in detail, since your DSO needs that document to issue the CPT authorization on your I-20. Also confirm the firm understands your authorized start date cannot move up once the I-20 is issued.
How do I find Family Law Paralegal employers who hire F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists employers with verified hiring history for F-1 students in legal support roles. Filtering for CPT-compatible positions saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering authorization issues late in the process. Focus on firms and legal aid organizations that have hired international students before, since they're more likely to have streamlined onboarding for CPT documentation.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the employer changes my start date?
Your CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer, start date, and end date listed on your I-20. If the employer pushes the start date back, your DSO must issue a new I-20 with the updated dates before you begin work. Starting before the authorized date, even by one day, is a status violation. Get any schedule changes confirmed in writing and bring them to your DSO immediately.
Does CPT work as a Family Law Paralegal count toward future OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect OPT. Most CPT paralegal roles are structured as part-time or semester-based precisely to preserve OPT. Confirm your weekly hours and total duration with your DSO before signing the offer letter.
