Get Access To All JobsCorporate Attorney CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Corporate Attorney CPT role need to be paid to count toward my curriculum?
No. CPT can be either paid or unpaid, but the work must be an integral part of your established curriculum regardless of compensation. Your school determines whether unpaid placements satisfy the academic requirement. Check with your DSO before accepting an unpaid role, since some J.D. programs require compensation for CPT authorization.
Can I do CPT at a corporate legal department instead of a law firm?
Yes. In-house legal roles at corporations qualify for CPT as long as the work connects directly to your J.D. coursework and your DSO approves the placement. Corporate legal departments often offer exposure to transactional work, contract drafting, and compliance that maps well to core law school curriculum requirements.
How do I find Corporate Attorney roles where the employer understands CPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by employers with documented work authorization filing history. Firms and legal departments that have sponsored international attorneys before are far more likely to understand CPT paperwork, I-9 requirements, and the academic authorization timeline your school needs before your start date.
What happens if my CPT authorization expires before the role ends?
You must stop working immediately. CPT is authorized per semester or academic term, so if your placement extends beyond the approved period, you need a new CPT authorization from your DSO before continuing. Plan renewal paperwork at least two to three weeks before the current authorization expires to avoid any gap in employment eligibility.
Does full-time CPT during law school affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against your OPT. Many J.D. students structure corporate law placements as part-time during the academic year specifically to preserve their 12 months of post-graduation OPT.
